That's my view as well. In the rifle matches, there's a tier of a few guys who turn in some scores that are all the more amazing once you've tried and failed at lesser goals. It isn't an equipment race either; I've found focus and technique to be what limits me.

I've picked up tips generously offered by them. This has allowed me to improve, but that top tier is really an order of magnitude better. I'm OK with that.

Actually, i quit doing it that way a long time ago. Just too many entries and folks sometimes lose track of a better score they might have shot earlier in the month.
So for the past 8 years I have been doing just what ynned feared... wading thru ALL the month's posts and grabbing each shooters best scores for the scoreboard.
For our typical ~30 entries each month, this takes me maybe 20 minutes to do, but i have developed a efficient system for doing it.
I see it as just part of what it takes to keep my match running well, so i don't mind it.

Ynned, if you want we can talk about it, PM me with phone number, its too much to write for a lousy typist like me
I can lead you thru it pretty fast if you are at the keyboard

BTW, aside from no longer requiring the "ENTRY" notation, everything else Zuki said about the rifle match is spot-on correct !

All the best,
Bob4BVM

I've been thinking about this since I posted that. I can't have it both ways; either you get to have your best score counted, or you have to designate an attempt as an entry. I'm going to try it for a few months like Bob says, with me picking the best attempt out of however many times you want to try. Maybe I'll set up a simple spreadsheet to enter each attempt into as they are made, then at the end of the month I'll be able to pick the best at a glance to post. Anyway, let me see how it goes for a while.

It would be such an easy courtesy toward each of you to make compilation simpler than reading a month's worth of posts. I'd even add that anyone should be able to give you his entry for the month in a bolded line in the title of his detailed score report:

25 yard iron sight entry
zukiphile CMMG 20 inch Aguila SV 400-10x

Yeah, sure
Heck i can't even get everyone to use the same entry form via cut & paste, let alone the same numerical format for the score itself so i don't have to reformat it,
after 8+ years of asking... (ie. 400-10X, not 400-10x )
Heck, i even had it set up to auto-parse the gun, ammo, score, & post# data from the standard entry form into the scoreboard spreadsheet, all of which was a lost cause if the form wasn't used !

But you know what , that is OK with me, I see this a labor of love anyway. My overarching goal is to have the match as simple & accessible as possible, to as many people as possible, with as few "disqualifications" as possible.
We have had many dedicated shooters at our match, not all of them are tops at their computer game but they love to shoot. So i accept whatever the Good Lord sends my way .
Cheers
Bob

Ynned,
IME, if you want to make this thing a go, you might have to cut em a bit of slack.
Designating entries is the ideal but not the real world for some it seems. I tried that early on and a few stuck to it, but shooters also come and go. So you are constantly re-training your new comers, of scaring them away when their attempts don't get counted... It's more work for you than just scanning all the Month's scores.

Like i said earlier, it is a very fast process to do at month's end and you don't need a spreadsheet, just a pen & paper. Let's get on the phone...
Cheers
Bob

Got out again today. Pretty windy, but it's above freezing and the snow's melting so I'm happy, even though my feet got cold and wet.

Tried again

Sunny (kinda) again today, so I went out to Dad's and slopped around in the slush and snow and mud. No improvement.

You guys got me all excited, I shoveled a 10 yard path to the bern. Hung 5 NRA TQ-3/1 targets and proceeded to perforate them with my GP100 which just came back from Ruger. First 3 targets looked like a chimp was behind the trigger. 4 was OK and 5 was what I was expecting. Think I should have waited after shoveling the 30” deep wet snow. More to follow.
Target 5
2-7’s
2-8’s
1-9
5-10’s
No X’s

Tomorrow try again, no shoveling required.
Great fun, can I use the 1911 or rim fire only?
1- 38
2-74
3-74
4-84
5-89
Total-359

Only a first run, will conform to the scoring format. Just good to go out and shoot. I’m 72 and prefer Iron sights.

Rich

Rich,
I had to look up the TQ 3/1 target, and it says it's the same as the A 23, so you're good to go there, we shoot 5 rounds each into 5 bulls for a total of 25 shots. Read the rules here, and join the fun. I was over ruled about the other calibers, it was thought the larger hole gave a scoring advantage, so rimfire only. In the rules thread, you'll find an entry format I'd appreciate you use, it makes it way easier for me to tabulate at the end of the month. I also included a printable target if you want it.
Later,
Dennis

5 rounds , that makes it easier, looking forward to this as I started my firearms addiction with pistols in the 70s as I felt rifles were cheating. Now I just enjoy it all. Thanks

************10 YD IRONS ENTRY*********

DATE:2/26/2020
SCORE:213-5x
NAME: Purple Bikerr (61)
LOCATION:Blue River Gun Club, Blue River, Wi
GUN: Ruger MK III 22/45
GUN SETUP: ___Scope __x__Iron Sights
AMMO: CCI Blazers
INDIV TGTS SCORES: 40-0x, 47-3x, 42,1x, 42-1x, 42

Mostly sunny, wind 15 mph (+-) from 6 o'clock. 'bout 12" of snow on the ground.

Ynned, thanx for setting up this match. I have been shooting the "Off-Hand Rifle Match" for 5-6 years. This gives me a "purpose" to get the Ruger and the Browning Challenger II (scoped gun) out of the house more often. I usually shoot steel. This will test my skills.
