Offhand Handgun Matches Scores and Discussion

Well, I've got it running, I think. Here's a score from last month to use as an example:

***10-Yd IRONS ENTRY***

DATE:1/21/2021
SCORE:193 -- 1X
NAME: Ynned AGE 68:
LOCATION: N.E.Ohio
GUN:
GUN SETUP: ___Scope __x_Iron sights
AMMO: Federal Thunderbolt
INDIV TGTS SCORES:45 1X, 32, 38, 39, 39
NOTES, WEATHER, light snow, 35 degrees give or take, typical North Coast gloom

Have fun and happy shooting. Oh, and cut me some slack on the posting of the scoreboard, I'm no wizard, so it won't look real pretty, but the scores will be right.

Good to see some scores already showing up.

And great work covering all three ranges with the pistol Joe. That dot looks just right sitting on top of that Victory too!

***10-Yd IRONS ENTRY***

DATE:2/13/21
SCORE:230 4X
NAME: Signmaster - Bob AGE: 58
LOCATION: Va Beach indoor
GUN: Ruger Mark II
GUN SETUP: stock iron sights
AMMO: Federal Automatch
INDIV TGTS SCORES: 49 2X

NOTES: Shot on three targets, but wish I could have kept up that first 5 target pace! Should have taken more targets to work on 15 and 25 yard, but got some centerfire pistol shooting in as well. I actually felt kind of shaky today, but my score went up. I'm wondering if I've been leaving more points on the table due to the (even cheaper) bulk ammo I used the last couple of practices.

I've got plenty of ammo for testing, might send some of the good stuff down the Ruger as I improve.

Nice target Bob. I have to buy some of these targets. All I see is a black circle at 10 yards on a printed one.

As I feared, I'm out of my league here, but that's not gonna stop me.
Guys, we talked about shooting as much as you want, then posting the best effort. It's only about half way into this month, so I don't know whether these are entries or practice...i.e., do you want me to post them? If we get a bunch of interest, I'm not gonna want to wade through the month looking for the best of several reports for very many people. Maybe mark them practice or entry? However you want to do it, but let me know whether to post them on the scoreboard.
Thanks,
Dennis

Joe,

I changed to a 6 o'clock hold because regardless of which A23 I print, it's just a black dot for me as well. The lower hold lets me get front sight contrast on the white, since I have limited light indoors where I shoot.

They do make A23 targets that have a white center (I think it's through the 9 ring) but I don't have any I could print. And in some cases, ordering targets is as cheap or cheaper than printing them off your printer, depending on ink costs.

For me this is all about personal improvement. I have no doubt some very good to great shooters are going to find this and humble my scores. I'm good with that, as it proves I have something to aim for with my goals. With all the variations in hardware, experience, ammo, shooting conditions, vision, etc.... all I can do is try to improve myself.

I'm personally hoping that some of the top notch guys show up so we can learn from them.

For mine, I marked it as an entry since I want to work on differing things later this month. But I will roll with whatever way you want to do it. It seems to me just declaring it as practice or entry should make it easier for your scoreboard if things get busy.

This is what Bob does with rifle entries.

For Bob to know which score you want to have entered, it needs to be marked "ENTRY" in the top line.

It also makes it easier if the same entry format is used by everyone.

That's my view as well. In the rifle matches, there's a tier of a few guys who turn in some scores that are all the more amazing once you've tried and failed at lesser goals. It isn't an equipment race either; I've found focus and technique to be what limits me.

I've picked up tips generously offered by them. This has allowed me to improve, but that top tier is really an order of magnitude better. I'm OK with that.

Notes and excuses: They sure do get smaller quickly as you add distance!

I improved 1 point over the last time I shot 15 yards in practice. Still using 6 o'clock hold. After shooting for score, I used a piece of building foam for a rest and shot a 45 on the same target, so it's me and not the weapon or adjustments.

More work to do at this and longer ranges, but I'm having fun with it.

The people that suck at this are lucky to have a couple rounds hit the paper to score. With the short barrels of handguns that most of us own, it's always going to be a challenge. It gives us something to build on with technique, sight picture and adjustments, and the whole sequence of when we squeeze off the round.

We are both on the same page here. I can only hope to shoot the scores some in the rifle matches are shooting, even if I upgraded hardware. Most of it is pure dedication and skillset in the case of that top tier.

At any level, we can absorb what the others do and see if it works for us. Also agreed on the hardware aspect. Unless a person is shooting pure crap hardware, the overall technique usually overcomes high end hardware in the hands of someone less skilled. And at some point we have to learn from our mistakes as well, and that might include hardware blame when it isn't the hardware.

Bob, I ordered 100 from Midway for $4. They will be here before I can go shooting again so that works for me. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to take the other weapons with me next time. I have a couple 22s with iron sites.
