Just traded some ammunition for a 513T, serial number 8662, date code XK. Is this a pre-9000 US purchase? Thanks. Cant wait to shoot it.

XK = Dec. 1941 or Dec. 63 - not necessarily military - if 1941 military it would have a [ U.S. property ] stamp on front receiver ring over chamber + acceptance stamp on stock - or a U.S. stamp with a property number on left rear receiver if 1963 - Pearl Harbor attack was 12/7/41 so chances are it was commercial production if 1941 - the bulk of military production for trainers was between 1942 + 1943 - there is no reliable records of serial numbers on barrels that i am aware of - pictures would help - the ones procured after WWII were for recreational use + not trainers -

Thomas Batha stated in his book that pre-9000 serialed US rifles weren't necessarily government-marked. 8662 serial is way too early for a 1963 rifle.

that reference is only to property stamp - all still would have to have a acceptance stamp before being placed into service as per DOD regulations - contract for 513's awarded in 1941 , active production did not start till after firsst 1/4 of 1942 there are other errors in the Batha book concerning the Remingtons - need pictures of stock , front site mounting , + metal finish - like i stated barrel serial numbers are not an indecationm of age or assembly sequence - i owned a 1963 property marked one with a 6000 serial number on barrel - many articles published by WWII commanders os ordnance dept in older Gun + collectors Digests -

are there 2 tapped holes used to mount the front sight + is there a dovetail under it ? - military contract called for an open post front sight on ramp - stock comb is altered from GI original configuration + stock finish is not GI original - does barrel have 4 tapped holes for mounting target scope + is it it stamped [ military finish ] near model number ? -

No military finish stamp. It's still in California jail, so no other pictures.

I don't know who else was trained with a 513T but as a freshman ROTC cadet at the Univ. of AR in 1955 I received preliminary rifle instruction with one.

after 1945 they were no longer used as military trainers ( why train on a bolt action when issued arms were all semi auto ] - they were used for rifle teams in competition , post recreational use , school + ROTC programs - U.S. acquired almost 70,000 , some as late as mid 1960's - post war acquisition was commercial + not the WWII contract specs - most were rebuilt + refinished over the years -

You see a lot of the military rifles with similarly modified stocks.

On the rear left side of the barrel should be some letters. They should be just above the stock line. Mine has W MM on the barrel and that is August 1943. What is on yours? My rifle is US Property marked in a couple of places.
