Weird.

541X guns were all government contract guns. Have one. Didnt get it with a rear sight but pretty sure it has the holes. Somebody did a nice job on the trigger. But the gun so far shot like crap with everything I tried. So its sat for many years.

If I saw a 541X without the aperature sight holes....I'd pull it apart and inspect it for any other variances. I would assume someone frankengun'd your rifle with a sporter reciever unless you bought it new in box. But being how the guns are all government contract.....you were definitely not the first owner. Maybe it was a refurbished gun. Who knows....

I have never seen a barrel marked like yours on a 541X . The stock is cut out for the rear sight receiver. I cant see any holes for the mounting. Mine shoots great. The receiver having scope groves suggests not a 541X. Of course I could be wrong, seen lots of things that dont agree with supposed history of firearms. Everything I can find says the 541X was produced 1984-86. Mine has 1987 stamped on barrel ? could be it was one of last production in 86 ?

As stated in another thread, post and aperture sights have no or very little magnification. Inserts in front globe are 1.5 X ect. The A23 target is made for open sights @ 50 yards. My eyes are way past shooting Post and aperture sights. I did shoot mine some after getting it 2 months ago with the open sights. It shot a .50 group with SK Rifle Match and a .39 with Eley Match. Shocked the heck out of me as I hadn't shot Post and Apertures since 1987. Thats when I decided to have it Drilled and Tapped for scope. It will wear a Nightforce 42X comp. I have a 3" forearm adapter on the rail and shot it off a one piece rest. I will shoot it bench Rest. Drawing a good factory barrel is like winning the lottery. I think I got a good one, will see when it comes back from the smith D/T with bases. Sometimes when you make a change the rifle goes south, even by just adding a scope.

IIRC, there were some "contract overrun" guns released through regular commercial channels but these were never a regular catalog item.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure my 541-X is marked like the one in the OP. I'll try to remember to look tonight when I get home from work

I guess i should have said my barrel is marked like the OPís. Yes, Original finish. Except for the white China marker in the lettering. Does yours have the U. S. stamped above the serial number on the receiver?

Mine too. Except I had a few extra letters added to mine

Mine wasn't drilled and tapped either (none were) but I used a jig to set mine up for a scope. The OP's didn't come set up for a scope either
