Replace 455 barrel with 457 MTR barrel

Has anyone done it? Does it work okay? Is it worth it considering the MTR barrel is priced much higher than the Varmint barrel?

I have been wondering the same thing. Also wondering if the MTR barrel would be as good or better than a Lilja barrel.

The Lilja is so expensive that I wonder whether it is a good match for a mass market sporter receiver. 457 MTR barrel starts at $289, 457 Varmint at $159.

I just ordered the CZ MTR barrel and it just shipped yesterday. I should be able to do some shooting soon to see what its capable of an if its better than what I have now. I hope its worth the money.

Marlin, counting on a future report from you in this thread. One thing I am wondering about is the functionality of the 455 extractor with the MTR barrel. With bullets engaging the rifling and a tight chamber, can you reliably extract intact cartridges and brass after firing?

Talking 457MTR Barrel

I got my 20" 457 MTR barrel today , got it installed easily and nick was right it was tight on closing the bolt on the ammo,( first pic of chambered round indented from rifling ) I had CCI SV and SK Standard plus. Here's my 50 yard target, Bottom left was sight in target, then top left was 10 shots CCI sv, then switched to SK bottom right 6 shots. This was just a test to see if this whole thing was going to work out. I had to quit shooting a grab my stuff because of the wind an rain coming , wind was blowing 5-10 right at me the whole time so I figured might as well put some rounds thru it. I will make another trip to the range soon. I'm happy with the results as it made an improvement so far from what I see. I can't wait to stretch it to 100yds.
Oh yeah I will use card stock paper targets next time.

Looking great! Thank you for the update. I ordered the 16 inch threaded MTR barrel today. Almost double the price of a varmint barrel but still less than aftermarket.

Hi Ontarget,

I'm curious how the new barrel turned out for you? Does it meet or exceed your accuracy expectations?

Nice I like the way it engraves the bullet head, this is a very good sign!

My Anschutz 54 does the same, initially I was worried, but thanks to Google I found out that many high end target rifles and pistols use this chamber in order to get slightly better results, as the tension on the bullet head is consistent and not at all lose.

Im sure it will print very well at 100 yards!

Has anyone reached out to CZ about the possibility of getting the MTR barrel shipped on the 457 Varmint stock? I assume $150 up charge as opposed to buying a $300 barrel. For those of us who dont have a spare 455 varmint to upgrade. I prefer the 457 Varmint over the 457 MTR stock.
