Lilja Rifle

I wrote a post about a special rifle a few years back, before Supersport existed. I took a break from RFC and never did anything with the rifle. I think this would be a good time to see what it'll do.

Here's that old post:

A number of years ago a friend of mine sold me a Rem 700 he built in 30-338, a wildcat cartridge of the time. This thing was a laser beam. My oldest son and myself had both taken Mule deer at long range with it. 150 grain bullets were what it liked best. I was sure this was one of the rifles I'd never sell...

The same friend, 10 years later. Hadn't spoken in over a year.
Calls out of the blue with questions about the 30-338...
I had no intention of parting with it, don't get me wrong here, it was not a pretty rifle. Contrary it was a tool. The best tool for the job often enough that I wanted no part of selling it.

My friend is persuasive... I'll give him that. It took him about a minute to get that rifle...

He cheated though, darn it.
He started telling me about an estate sale he had just attended. Seems it was a friend of Dan Lilja. In that sale he said was an early 10/22 SN 47xx. Dan had put a Lilja 22LR barrel and Jewell Trigger group on the rifle for his friend. As well as reworking the carbine stock.

Needless to say, I'll miss that old rifle...

Here's a photo of the rifle the way I received it.

Should be fun to run this old Lilja/Ruger against some of the new Kidd stuff thats out there.

Thanks Trim! It means a lot to me that you replied here.

I have a feeling this rifle will be a shooter.
The Jewell trigger is scary light, I'm guessing 6 oz. and it breaks clean without any discernible movement.

With luck I'll take it to the range on Sunday.

What a nice and historic rifle. I will be following this one closely. There is always something special about a rifle one of the famous gunsmiths had something to do with the building of it. This has been true since flintlocks were the best rifles of their time.

I think this rifle has real possibilities.

Likewise.

I have a receiver that needs a good heavy barrel and a good bolt and any wood or laminate stock I can get CHEAP and that means pert near FREE.
