Other day I (jokingly) told one of our junior engineers that he was a nincompoop. He replied, "I assume that's not a complement."

Yeah, he was probably just a "whippersnapper".

And while we're at it, just what is a whippersnapper? I should probably know cause apparently I was one.

Smile Can I play , too ?

Huzzah ! This thread could go on forever , as language keeps on evolving . What's really a hoot is to watch some of the old British comedy shows on PBS just to hear how our two "English" dialects have diverged .

Yep, who said it? "Two peoples divided by a common language?" or words to that effect.

Not sure how long "bullets" will last. A young man emphatically told me that copper colored are bullets and anything made from lead is boolits. Could not convince him otherwise. He had seen it o the internet.

Words no longer in circulation - roustabout - slacker - ne'er do well.

Phrases - When asked what the other person said : And what did he allow ?

When asked if an anticipated action was okay : Sure you can - it's a free country, isn't it ?

I don't hear those much any more either ...

Aye

I am oft perplexed by the shambles our utterances have devolved to. Makes me nigh compelled to decry our predicament with "Alack and alas!"

Two of my favorites are "tickety-boo" (essentially all's well), and "push, pull, click, click" (essentially easy as pie; that's another good one, actually).

Extinct not!

Maybe he (junior engineer) is not as smart as he thinks he is.

The word spoof comes to mind. In 1993 some of the young kids in my college class did not think spoof was a word.

Careful. You’ll get dragged into HR. Did he run to the “crying room “ and spend some quiet time?

My grandmother used to always call the sofa a Davenport. One of those manufacturers that became synonymous with a product. Kind of like a Crapper.

"You're welcome" isn't really extinct, but the phrase "No problem" has largely replaced it, to our detriment. My wife and kids think there is something wrong with me for not liking it.
