truckjohn,

I'm really into guns and especially twenty-two's. When my kids were old enough to start shooting I went through several rimfires... same as I am still doing now that they are teenagers.

I never tried the Henry as I disliked the cantilever scope mount.

We had a couple of Cricketts but never warmed to them. Primarily as the scope mount is not that robust, and having to cock them by pulling on the cocking knob which is too stout for them to do alone, and that there is no feed tray for the cartridge... it must be shoved into the chamber.

Savage came out with a model called the 'Cub', drilled & tapped for scope mounts (weaver) and had an excellent receiver sight. Had a nice wood stock, Feed Ramp & conventional safety. Loading a round with the bolt cocked the rifle... unlike the Crickett.

A couple of years later they came out with the "Rascal', which was basically the Cub model with a trimmer synthetic stock and a much lower price.

Having had both of the Savage models I would recommend against the Cricket & the Henry. And go with the Savage Rascal (or the discontinued Cub).

Someone noted above that you left out the CZ Scout. It is the nicest & of course the most expensive. The advantage is that it comes with a single-shot tray but also takes other CZ magazines (5 & 10 shot). This is a larger rifle than the Cricket/Cub/Rascal rifles so you would have to handle them to see which is a best fit for your kids.

Enjoy,

Jerry
