I have Century Limited #21XXX. I bought to shoot in lever action matches.

The metal is about 98%. The wood is dinged up. It has the seal on the receiver and the gold plate on the stock.

I have been thinking about refinishing the wood and removing the gold plate. I would also remove the seal from the receiver.

I understand these are not collectible because of the numbers made. Is that correct? Would I be better keeping it original?

BTW can anyone tell me what type of adhesive was used to glue the seal to the receiver? I am concerned about damage to the bluing once the seal is removed.

Thanks

I don't know if you have tried the search function for answers to your question, but there was talk about this in the not too distant past. From what I remember when the seal on the receiver was removed it took the blueing off with it. There are threads that also address refinishing the stocks, with what to do and what not to do. Good luck with your endeavour.

Tim

I did some searches when I got the gun a few weeks ago just to get an idea about what I had but I do not remember reading anything about the seal.

I'll do another search.

Thanks

Frank

The other thread confirmed my memory that there is a machined circle under the seal. It was an Article II rather than a Century Limited.

But that seal! It would look so much better without it.

Thanks Guys

I looked at it and it does appear to be machined.

I just accept the medallion on my Century and my Zane Grey 336. I can wish it was not on there but I am not going to mess it up trying to get rid of it. All the times I have been to the shooting range there has never been another one there. See 39A's but no Century.

The Article II is NIB and unfired with all paperwork, ain't going to do nuttin' to it…

The CL is less than perfect so gets shot, again the medallion doesn't do much for me but the mess it would make removing it would destroy the value all together.

I would definitely not mess with the gold medallion on the receiver if it were mine. It's part of the rifle, shoot it and enjoy it. JMHO.

I have never taken my Century to the range were it did not get a compliment. All that shiny brass on a slick little lever action all ways gets attention. The guys just can't help asking about what kind of gun it is and where can they get one.

When faced with that type of decision I tend to leave things as they are. My thinking is that I can always refinish it on down the road if I finally am sure that is what I want. What you can't do is refinish it and then later decide you want it to be original. Waiting to make sure of what you want to do is usually a wise move.
