Value help...39 Carbine

Log in to see fewer ads
Back story on this one is that I've been asked to help determine a value on this rifle. My father-in-law has a friend at church that's dying of cancer. I'm told the guy doesn't have two nickels to rub together and is just looking to sell his rifles and handguns.

I was directed here by the guys over at 24hourcampfire.com. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

I'm terrible sorry to hear of this mans misfortune, never the less it doesn't increase the value of the rifle. There are problems with the condition from what I see from the pictures, sling swivels in wrong place, rust on receiver, bulls eye missing, etc. I would rate the overall condition at 60%. The scope doesn't add anything to the value as far as I'm concerned. Depending on what part of the country your in, I would say 300-350 and that is because I have read about the poor sole's hand he has been dealt.

That would hit about $450 around here, if the bore is good. That is because it is a carbine, a fairly rare gun. Good luck.

That's a rare Marlin 39 Carbine. Only 12,140 were made from 1964 to 1967. Even with all its warts and freckles, I'll bet he gets at least $700 for it on gunbroker.

+1 That is a very collectible version of the 39. Have seen them in excellent condition go for as high as 1K and a bit more on the internet. I know Marlin collectors who have been looking for decades without finding one. Have one of my own and I will never part with it.

By the way, do not attempt to refinish the gun in anyway. That will only decrease the value. Wipe it down with a good grade of gun oil and call it good.

I would also visit Marlinowners.com (of which I am a member). You would very likely get an offer to buy. (Moderator, if this is inappropriate, feel free to delete.)

Just a note, I bought mine at public gun auction (lots of gun people) 2 years ago for $450. 90%+ blue and wood, no rust. I don't think enough people know what these are to drive the price up. They are asking $750 for mounties around here.

Quite true. We were at an estate auction and got our is mint condition for $325 and no one else, there, recognized the Carbine for the collectible little gem it was. On the internet, though, you'll have a much better chance of reaching Marlin addicts, like me, and do better than selling it, locally.
