How loud is your 10 inch barrel?

With subsonics, should I expect significantly louder report from a 10 inch pistol than from a 16 inch rifle? Is it more akin to a 22lr five or six inch pistol barrel?

I thought this subforum would be the right place to ask.

Long ago, I had a Buckmark Silhouette I purchased with the idea that I could shoot without muffs with subsonic ammunition. I went a couple of years only shooting indoors, so I sold it. I'm thinking of another 10 inch pistol, and I'm curious about the report when shooting outdoors.

I appreciate that I am asking for a subjective impression. I looked for metering data but found none.

Thanks

It's to loud for no hearing protection in my opinion. I 98% shoot outdoors.

I have six Chargers:
Two 8"
Three 10"
One 11" (17 Mach 2)

I have linear comps on all six, and I dont find any of them unpleasant to shoot out doors, especially with subsonic ammo.

Everybody is different, and some folks have more sensitivity to loud sounds.

First off, I don't shoot anything without ear protection anymore. A 10 inch bbl handgun, non revolver, isn't bad. I really enjoy shooting my Thompson Center Contender 10 inch .22 magnum, but it's still a handgun, louder than a rifle.

Do you have a preferred linear compensator?

Do you use linear comps because in the absence of a linear comp the report seems appreciably sharper?

How do you keep the muzzle and comp from disappearing under lots of crud?

I second Buckstreak's question too. Which do you like most?

I've found the linear comps help in keeping the noise out front. They don't really lower the report, but it doesn't seem as loud with one, to me... even on rimfires.

I like those from Kaw Valley the most... but I've also found a brand called Tacbro that have proven to be quite good for the money. I have several other brands as well: Simple Threaded Devices; S&J Hardware, DPMS (LeVang)...

I use nickel anti-seize (high temp) on the threads and a wave washer (or rubber o-ring) to keep them tight, but easy to remove.

All are made of steel, so they are not that hard to clean.
