Thumbs up Strip and Refinish your Factory Grips

Log in to see fewer ads
The grips you have were made by Herretts as OEM supplier to Browning and came finished with that dark stain stock on your Buckmark. Back in the day, the basic models got the black rubber grips and the more deluxe models like yours got wood. Underneath the dark stain/finish they are really nice American Walnut! I would suggest that you use a bit of stripper and some 320 grit sandpaper to strip and sand the old finish off. Then, as recommended by Backlash above, refinish them with some TruOil. Apply 8-10 coats with some sanding, or 0000 steel wool, between alternate coats.

I have done this with my Buckmark UFX grips that started out identical to yours and they came out beautiful! The small amount of stain that remained after stripping and sanding really brought out the natural grain of the wood.

I found the exact wraparound rosewood finger groove grips that I wanted at Handgungrips.com. Dug up a couple Browning medallions I had in my parts bins and countersunk them into the rosewood. They fit my big paws perfectly and look exactly the way I wanted them to. Thanks to all for your help.

Those grips look great. The really make that pistol 'Pop'!

I had the same stock 'Target Grips' on my 5.5 Field. I bought a set of 'Classic' Grips directly from Browning.

Stock Walnut 'Target Grips' (They come pretty dark from the factory)

Browning 'Classic' Grips

Thanks, folks! I appreciate the kind words. I always love it when I have a specific picture in my mind of how I want a project turn out, run into some challenges getting it done (availability), persevere – and feel rewarded by having the final iteration feel and look perfect to me. In this case, I had to do extensive internet searching including a list of vendors found in a sticky here on RFC – and found exactly what I was looking for from an obscure vendor at a decent price- and then finished out the project with customization with little touches like countersinking the medallions into the rosewood... so satisfying. She’s a keeper, for sure. Accuracy is outstanding from this one, or I likely wouldn’t have gone to all this trouble.

Thanks again for your help and support-

DrG
