1950 (G) 39a what is the single threaded hole in the front top of the receiver ,factory done ,never touched ,filler screw installed,what is its purpose?
You can just see it in the second photo,ahead of and in line with aperture,the first photo just the edge is viweable,took another better pic No.3

That screw holds onto a cartridge guide underneath... inside the action. Its just a shaped flat spring metal that allows the round to be guided into the chamber. What ever you do, don;t take that screw out unless you need to replace the guide. Once you take the gun apart, in two halves, you will see that part the screw you are talking about holds in place.

What Gizzy said, plus you already have the ideal sight on there, just screw in the smaller appature when you want to target shoot.

And, Iirc, 1953 was the last year of the Mdl 39's having cut rifling, after that I think it switched to MicroGroove.

Now I remember ,just noticed it!not looking to change to a scope just ,for some reason did not remember that screw, I shot two Great groups with that rifle before eye strain, made me shoot bigger targets last weekIMG_20200329_155812_1585513710002.jpgI adjusted to the left properly but I adjusted down instead of up on target 2 ,really got to mark the direction somehow.
