fairly tame. louder than 22lr naturally but far queiter than shotgun or high powered centrefire.

the loudness is somewhat subjective, you're better off to borrow (go to range??) one and try it out yourself.

definitely louder. i'd estimate "twice" as loud.

still a lot quieter than a centerfire.

a .22LR sort of "pops" without quite as much echoing CRACK as you get from .22 magnum. the muzzle report is louder, but the sonic shockwave is a LOT louder.

Put it this way - I have a Winchester 9422 in WMR, and I can fire it without earmuffs no problem. It's definitely louder than 22LR, the crack from the bullet is more pronounced. I like the noise, it's a healthy sounding report.

I also shoot 17HMR, which is about as loud, but rather irritating as it is a very high pitched sound. Has me putting the muffs on.

From my 5.5" Ruger S/A it's definately a sharp crack. From my wife's derringer, %%%% loud (and hopefully scary)....

Its a hazardous cartridge to your hearing, since its not uncomfortable to shoot w/o protection many people do, or are tempted to.

If you are shooting targets, cans, or from a prone posistion on woodchucks in a field I strongly suggest the hearing protection, because while it doesn't hurt at first, after 50 rounds you'll have an earache. And its not a big boomer like a .25-06 or any other deer/long range varmint rifle you may encounter it is still dangerous to your hearing.

say what?

I don't fire any pistol without plugs these days. In my foolish youth, I shot a Colt Commander without muffs, and did permanent damage to my left ear. Constant ringing now. Shooting pistols without plugs isn't being tough - it's being dumb.

If noise is the issue, FORGET the 22 mag. I bought my 22lr because the mag was too loud for target shooting around my house.

I think it would be enough to irritate neighbors, while a .22 lr wont bother alot if they are inside and you are outside, the mag can be heard more through walls etc. and cause annoyance.
