RFC Ultimate 10-22 Hall of Fame

Log in to see fewer ads
Hello, and welcome to the RFC Ultimates Hall of Fame thread.
The pages that follow are some of the truly remarkable rifles that were built in the past by RFC members.
The idea for this thread came from member Passinby, a former site moderator.
Passinby created a number of truly exquisite rifles, some of which will be featured here.
Some of the rifles are from far back in RFC's past.

This thread is for posting pictures and build specs of historic Ultimate rifles ONLY.

PLEASE keep this thread uncluttered, it will be closed most of the time and opened for the addition of posts that contain data/pics of the rifle.
If you browse this thread and the thread is open for posts, please do not post here, as it is likely that the thread is open for the moderator to edit or add to it's contents.

To submit a rifle to this thread, send me a PM or email. Only TRULY exceptional rifles will be voted on my the members for entry into the Hall of Fame.
IF you have a candidate that obviously belongs in this thread, Start a thread with a bio of the rifle, build specifications, pics of the rifle and targets if applicable.

I, Pappy or admin will post a poll thread here in the Ultimates forum and members will vote on whether to include it or not.

Enjoy!!!

Indy's Ultimate

This rifle was built with parts and services donated to Indy, the founder and mastermind behind the best corner of the 'net by RFC Vendors and members,
and represents the birth of the Ultimates forum.

"Indy's Choice" by Passinby

This rifle was the only original "Ultimate of the Month" when Indy tried to get a monthly ulti off the ground. There was no voting. Indy picked it out and posted it when he made the announcement. It was up for several months until Indy realized the feature was not going to fly and removed it. It was the picture and boxed feature that came up when opening the home page.

Specs: B&C Anschutz stock, custom painted in in red-orange "magma" by Tuck. 27" GM octagon barrel custom polished and blued to 600 grit. Chambered, crowned and threaded to receiver by Randy at CPC. Ruger OEM receiver; CPC bolt; bolt handle and return by Rimfire Technologies. KID 8/8 two-stage trigger. Black Weigand mount carrying an Bushnell Elite 8-32x40AO scope. 1/4" club; 3/8" club; 1/2" club.

"The Ultimate Classic Carbine"

by InfamousJ

The purpose was to refresh/restore the second gun I ever owned (the first I ever worked to get) as a kid, and pay tribute to the role it played in developing my interests in the outdoors, shooting, hunting, and responsibility of firearm ownership...After finding the stock burried in the kid's closet amongst toys, clothes, and baby stuff, I had to rescue it and do whatever in my power to bring it back to life to the best of my abilities...I wanted as many original parts as possible, while at the same time upgrading every functioning part available without making it looking overly modified or cluttered with too many aftermarket parts...To personalize it, I wanted to build it in a way that was also unique and "one-of-a-kind" if possible which can be difficult since the rifle is so popular and so many were made...

Stock, receiver, Bolt by QUE, trigger guard, butt plate, barrel band are all original and hand polished

Stock-high gloss lacquer finish...
Trigger-Brimstone Tier(3)? (whatever his best job is) with Power Custom oversized safety...
Ruger factory stainless barrel, shortened to 16 inches, threaded, and rechambered by QUE with DIP thread protector...
Superior Concepts charging handle
Harris bipod
RT pillar bed kit/custom brass receiver pins, VQ takedown screw, KIDD Vblock, TI mag release, TI-25 mag, Dyed BX-1 Ruger mags,
Nodak NDS 40 front sight...NDS 26 rail/peep combo...

August 2013 Contest Winner:

"Tuck Molten Magma" by Chaser

Per Chaser-

Can't find the original thread...and really did not step by step it the way guys are doing it now.

Did find...

Post 108
https://rimfirecentral.com/forums/sho...atewood&page=8

Post 3
https://rimfirecentral.com/forums/sho...light=Gatewood

It was Gatewood born like this...Tuck nicknamed it "ol ugly" while he was workin' on it...

Several in this one..
https://rimfirecentral.com/forums/sho...light=Gatewood

Several things...this gun morphed several times...
Stock was by C. Gatewood whom stated it was one of 40 that he build...39 of which were shipped to Germany..this one is said to be (but I can't prove that) the only one (originals) in the USA...then I had him Ebony grip cap it...making it even more one-of-a kind.
Tuck added the Molten Magma.
It has had 2 barreled actions in it..first a "T" barreled action with my home brew trigger..
It has has at least 3 triggers in it..as it is right now it has a late 70's Alum TG, RT pull release, Power Custom Hammer and Adj. Sear, RT Trigger with matching Candy Red inset and torsion return at 2 lbs. that I hand tuned. RT bolt handle assembly with my Skullie Bling, Bolt by CPC, all internals polished.
The barrel is one of the RFC limited/numbered muzzle weighted that GM did..it is #36 of 100. Flutes painted and Stainless was polished to glossy by me.
The Rec. that it now wears is/was one of the most un-savory that Ruger ever produced..THE TEXTURE PAINT version..I was determined to make it look nice and opted to carefully strip the top edges of the Rec.and paint it with the matching Candy Red..then top coated with Automotive Clear.
Intensity 6.5-20x44AO optic with threaded filter, TS base, Burris Sig Zee Rings.
It is a proven MOA shooter out to 75 yds. Targets archived so deep I can't find them...not shot enough at 100 yds to be proven and very limited usage as of the last 3-4 years and has resided mostly in the safe when peeps are not drooling on it and fondling it.

Todays Pic's...

August 2013 Contest Second Place:

"McMillan/Kidd Supergrade" by Dr Heckel

August 2013 Finalist

This is truly my dream 10/22. Often once you finish with a build you think if I were to do it over again I'd change this or that. That isn't the case this time. It's everything I wanted and turned out even better than I imagined.

I started this build with the stock as the main focus. I knew that this rifle was going to be used off of a bench only so I wanted to get a stock designed for that purpose alone. A 3" wide forend was a must have feature . I looked around at all of the options and the McMillan Anschutz BR-50 was the clear favorite for me. I changed my mind on the color combo numerous times and my uncertainty delayed my order considerably. I thought I would like a light grey/med grey/black flame marble so I searched everywhere I could to find one similar. Once I laid my eyes on it I knew it was the color combo for me so I placed the order. I had McMillan set the LOP to 14" and also had them do a complete fill on the stock to maximize the weight for stability. Once I placed my order I had to wait just over 4 months for them to complete the stock. It turned out great and I couldn't be happier.

When it came to the barreled action it wasn't a tough decision at all. This was going to be my dream 10/22 and I wanted the best of the best. IME that title goes to KIDD. I already owned a complete KIDD Classic so I knew how high quality their rifles are. I chose their Supergrade receiver which has the barrel threaded into the receiver for maximum stability and removes any possibility of movement between the barrel and receiver. On standard 10/22s the barrel slides in the receiver and is held in by a small metal block and two screws. The receiver also has an rear tang which adds a second takedown screw and makes the receiver incredibly stable. The barrel is a 20" bead blasted .920. The trigger is the legendary KIDD two stage with black straight blade and is set at 3ozs for the first stage and 3ozs for the second. It is an absolutely amazing trigger and perfect for a dedicated benchrest rifle. Finally I chose KIDDs black ion bonded scalloped bolt to contrast with the silver receiver.

The scope is a Weaver T36 with 1/8 dot reticle. I used Burris Signature Zee rings which have many benefits over standard rings. The most notable is the ability to swap the polymer inserts to add MOA to the rings. This allows you to shoot at longer ranges with cranking the scopes internal adjustments. I have it set-up to shoot anywhere from 15 yards out to 200+ without any hold over.

Finally I'd like to say thank you to all that helped me get to the finals! I truly appreciate your votes!

SLIDESHOW

I've posted a handful of target in my original build thread. The rifle is easily a MOA shooter. Targets on page 4-
https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...d.php?t=495222

The rifle is currently in first place in the 1/4" at 25 game, target on page 18-
https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...d.php?t=462790

And 8th place in the 1/2" at 50 game, target page 12-
https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...d.php?t=462794

I haven't had this rifle to the range all that much yet, definitely less than 10 times. Its looking to be incredibly accurate and Im getting tighter groups every trip to the range. I expect the accuracy to continue to improve the more I get it out and shoot it!

Thanks for nomination on the rifle guys! Been a while since I've been here...work, life and kids have taken up most of my time lately, so haven't gotten to shoot much lately.

Special thanks to azguy for doing the fantastic bedding job and added rear tang, and to Leo Bourne for the one of a kind stock. The gun shoots lights out..1" 100 yard groups are common with it.

I'll happily accept the nomination:bthumb
