These shootin sticks don't cost nothing. You just put some nylon string in your pocket, pick out two likely saplings, cutem down, and trim em, then you tie em together towards the top. Then you fork em and use em for..............ooops, I think I just told on myself.

Squatch and I went huntin' Thursday. I saw two, didn't get a shot. It was cold and the wind came up with the sun. Both squirrels went into den trees early and didn't come back out.
Squatch said he didn't see any squirrels, but a bobcat walked by a few yards in front of him. He got to watch it until it finally ambled off.
This is their breeding season and, like most males, they they let their hormones rule their brains when a female is around. I had smelled cat spray a couple of places along the trail I was on, but I didn't see one on my side of the ridge.

I was shootin' my Browning .22 today for 2 hrs--I've got some major disciplining to do on my part--I'm consistent--but low and to the right---even put 4 shots in a row right through the same spot makin' the orignal hole bigger. I dunno why the heck I started doin'it-but i'm pullin' to the right and droppin' / flinchin'--had it been a squirrel he wouldn't have gotten away--but the point is--it wasn't where I wanted it to hit---I had Mister shoot it to make sure it wasn't the gun--thankfully it's not the gun--he nailed the target right where he planned ---so now I hafta work harder---I can do that.

Nope....I carry a Bowie knife in addition to my skinner. It's just for makin shootin sticks and choppin up snakes and firewood and such....blade's 11 inches long.....it's my survival tool. I can also use it to keep 400 pound women at bay, flip brown suckers out of the way, and skin them tough Kansas bears too.

There's a feller down the road from me with a HUGE teepee in his yard by the way. I think he cheated by using power tools and hardware though.

You all had better be carefull with those cookies.

The last time I was at CJ's house, I saw a case of Exlax and a case of Metamusal on the shelf. Both had sticky notes with "Shawnee" on them.

I'm not sure what she is up to but she has been known to get a jump on folks. I figured she wants to beat someone to the best squirrel tree or something.

Moving, don't you think?

Hope Sarge and Squacks didn't see their shadows today. I did my part and stayed inside. Probably was an unncecessary precaution because it doesn't look like there will be much chance of seeing my shadow this week.

squirrel tale: there was no chance of seeing a shadow here today, but i hope it does not warm up here until about may 1. i plan on doing some ice fishing before that. we are getting some additional inches of the white stuff tonight.

squirrel season is out here. got in a little rabbit hunting on sat. it was mighty frigid but we had some fun anyways.

luck!

CJ,
Those spinners can be a lot of fun as I know you have witnessed the boys at "the farm" using mine.

But, please be carefull and be sure where that lead is going. The local gun club does not allow them as they have had a problem with ricochets getting off the property.

Have fun!

Hey,
It's sort of like dealing with a Rattle Snake. Keep your distance and don't take your eyes off of that mouth!

You may have to move quick, you may have to run, you may even get bit, but it won't kill you.

Sometimes I guess, you just plain ask for it!

Also if ya'll kidnap me do I have to ride up there in a crate in the back of a pickup?

What part of Arkansas do you live in? I'm up in Bentonville in the North West corner. Got a young Jack Russell terrier I'm trying to get started.

Squirrelsniper,
How's the new job going? Seems you've been busy of late, hope you find some extra time to make it to the hunt in Sept.

CJ,
I have spinner targets and love em, I built a box around them and covered it with sod, works great and is easy to do. CLANG!

Good Day All

450CartridgeBeltMan,
If you spent 5 hours catching up on this post then I suspect you would fit in just perfect at our annual get together in Sept. at the Shawnee National Forest in IL. Lots of great people to meet, good food, embellished stories, and wonderful hunting grounds to romp around in. Welcome to the squirrel threads and don't be a stranger.

Good Day

I would love to join all of you guys and gals on that squirrel hunt theres just one problem all my vacation time that i have left is allready spoken for by the wife and daughter and as you all know if the wife aint happy aint nobody happy so i guess i will have to spen a week on the lake camping and fishing[what a bore]ha ha. Love to squirrel hunt deer hunt duck hunt rabbit hunt fish anything that has to do with the outdoors, did mention hunting.Maybe after Oct. when i get some more vacation time some of you guys and come down here to Ark. and we can have a weekend squirrel hunting fishing camp out. I was a member of marlin talk a couple years ago, and was looking at there website and marlin talk and realized what all i was missing all of the good information and great people that are on here. Keep up of the good work. Looking at the marlin .17 thinking about retiring my Marlin model 57 .22mag and my ruger 10/22 and getting a marlin .17 which should really do a number on some squirrel heads with hollow points.

How did you extract the entire archive without getting the graphics junk included? I'm glad you saved this one. There are a couple of others worth saving as well.

howdy all!

just wanted to mention that a lot of the thread "squirrel hunters...the tree kind" is on the net. a web search for that exact title or the shawnee 2003 thread, will bring either of them up.

i do not know what happens to them when marlin pulls the plug but i was amazed to find them on the web.

it's great to see you all here.

a big howdy to all the RABID SQUIRREL HUNTERS! you know who you are.

luck!

Glad you made it. Many of us were worried that you might not find us.

Happy that you did. Have you been visiting that new grandson?

howdy all!

it's sure is great to see all these familiar names. makes me feel to home already.

the squirrel season in wisconsin and illinois has ended and there is a long dry spell ahead. i am going to do the best i can to fill it in as best i can with a dab o fishin and turkey hunting.

i been thinking of a possible fish fry on one of the nights in shawnee. of course this would be in addition to the annual squirrel bbq! we could hardly have a squirrel hunt with out cooking up a few squacks!

i should be able to come up with enough gill filets to feed an army....at least a small army of squirrel hunters. we will see how ambitious i get about filleting that many.

luck!
