See if you can find a copy of Herbert Houze's book "The Winchester Model 52" - if you don't want to shell out a bunch of money, you might be able to find one in a library using use worldcat.org.
Thanks for info. I will check those sources out

Pre A Sporters

Just picked up #36241 from the estate of a former NRA president in the '50s. Regretfully a prone shooter so he had Unertl bases on bbl & patched stock where receiver base was! Family said he bought it at a local hardware store mid '30s.It has a reddish finished stock of reasonable grain stock.
Just a really classy squirrel gun now.

I have a C target model of 103946C. So it sounds like it was made near the end of the run. My brother used this rifle in small bore competition in California in the mid-1960's as I recall.

I'm looking for a value on it so I can sell it for him. Wood stock, it does have an adjustable butt plate on it that can be removed for a shoulder hook. 2 5 round magazines, bull barrel model with Redfield sights.

Added adjustable buttplate is going to hurt value. I would suggest taking some good clear pictures, and posting them directly to the Winchester 52 website. Let the experts take a look and give you an evaluation.

That s/n is right on the edge of the switch over to "unmarked A's". I have in my records that the approximate date for the new modification to the receiver("A" style receiver) was 36699. Would you happen to have a picture of the rear of receiver just to verify that it is a "pre A", or do you know for certain?

Receiver was serialized Oct 1, 1920 per polishing room records.

Yes, that would be an unmarked "A" revision sporter. I happen to have 38067, which is most likely a twin to yours.

52B Sporter

I own SN 75201B. I have found conflicting information about the D&T on receivers for the late B Sporters in conjunction with the C models. Shed any light on this???

I own or have owned what I refer to as "late"B Sporters(after s/n 7XXXX) clear up to 84498B. None have had drilled/tapped receivers. That is not saying Winchester would not have done it as a special order, but I would certainly be skeptical. Quite honestly, I have seen more early B sporters d/t'd than late ones. I have never yet seen a d/t'd pre C Sporter that I was certain was factory d/t'd. I'm sure they our there, but unless there is some provenance supporting origins of holes, I would assume they are aftermarket.
One thing you might want to do is check hole patter against a factory C Sporter, and compare with yours to see if it has exactly same dimensions.

I have a "B" - Serial No, 7371XB

As far as I have found, the polishing room records show it in '39, but other records show it was "cataloged" or sold in '52.. Can anyone verify either of those?
