New Bipod Shooting Game?

Log in to see fewer ads
I'm "long winded" , so here's the short version of our Hunting Game:
1) Shoot any SuperStock Bolt action rimfire.
2) Any rimfire ammo or caliber.
3) Use the Targets posted at the bottom of this page, there are a bunch of them. Shoot one shot at each critter. Edge shots must completely cut the line to count.
4) If you have a scoped firearm shoot at 50 yards (or more!). With iron sights (or 1 power red dot) you may shoot at 25yards. Any sight offhand may use 25yards.
5) Here's the catch! No rear rest (except your hand)! No fancy store-bought front rest, like a Caldwell, Fudd, Sinclair etc... A bipod is OK. Any configuration of sandbags is OK. For example, so far we've rested bags & bipods on a shooting bench, a tractor(!), a lawnmower(!) and a truck hood, used shooting sticks, a blanket roll, a backpack, the side view mirror on a truck, prone & so on.
6) Post a picture of the target, the firearm and the ammo. Nuthin' to it! Re-shoot as many time as as you like with the same firearm.
The idea is to simulate hunting, plinking & have fun.

Here's a target example you can download at the bottom of this page:

We like a little humor here:

This is the long version :
Chromie was starting this in the auto section, I had been thinking about it for some time & wondered what you guys thought. Here is the outline I came up with a while back for a hunting game.
Simply use something like the Squirrel Popper target (but with slightly smaller Kill Zones), fired from a casual bench rest, instead of offhand, with the range increased to 50 yards, but 75 & 100yds might be more fun. A casual bench rest would be "any hunting positions, sitting, standing, prone, at a shooting bench or table, across the hood of the pick-up with shooting sticks, bi-pods a piece of log, and hunting type sandbag, whatever you would do in the woods, no front bench rest (like a Caldwell, Hart, Sinclair, etc) and no rear bags" So from the shooting bench at your range, with a bipod & no rear rest is OK.
The target I came up with is at the bottom of the page. No print scaling.

I would split it into two ammo categories for a given distance; this would give a Hunting Game & a Target Game. Target would be any ammo, so you could go at it with your good stuff, and Hunting would be any High Velocity ammo (does not have to be hollow point) or ammo designated as hunting by the mfg, for example Eley Subsonic Hollow Point, CCI Mini Mag, SGB, Win Sup-X etc would be ok. I might even add a third category for bulk or cheap ammo, like Wildcat, Blazer etc.

Rifle Classes)
1) Super Stock Bolt Action/ Sporter.
2) Super Stock Bolt Action/ Varmint.

Sights) Any, but extra kudos should go to those who use optics that will not magnify above 10 power. (Makes it fun for hunters with 2-7x, 3-9x, 3.5-10x scopes)

Ammo Classes)
1) Hunting, any .22lr high velocity or specific hunting ammo like Eley Subsonic Hollow Point. CCI Mini Mag, SGB, Win Sup-X etc
2) Target, any .22lr ammo.
3) Bulk, cheap .22lr stuff. Time to get out the Wildcat! (And let the frustration begin)
4) Hi-Power, ANY rimfire, 5mm, 22mag, 22wrf, 17hmr and 17m2. (Might be too easy for 17hmr?)

Distance)
1) 50Yds
2) 75Yds
3) 100Yds or more
4) 25Yards is for IRON SIGHTS ONLY OR Any sights offhand!

Target)
See the target at the bottom of the page. 4, 5 and 6 hits out of 6 qualify. An outside edge "Hit" must completely cut the outer line. Use the target attached below, with no changes allowed except in the information section below the critters at the bottom of the page. (Exceptions to this rule would be additions to the target that do not alter the Prarie Dog/target or add aiming points) For example a tasteful skull & crossbones (!) or other such graphic here & there, whatever you want, just so it does not offer an aiming point.

Rest)
Chromie expressed this best & thought it through better than I did. He wrote "A casual bench rest would be any hunting positions, sitting, standing, prone, at a shooting bench or table, across the hood of the pick-up with shooting sticks, bi-pods a piece of log, and hunting type sandbag, whatever you would do in the woods, no front bench rest (like a Caldwell, Hart, Sinclair, etc) and no rear bags" So from the shooting bench at your range, with a bipod & no rear rest is OK.

Post Results)
Post a picture of the target, and don't forget the ammo & rifle. Enter as often as you like.
Do you guys think this would be fun? Seems like it would give us a chance to play with just about any rimfire bolt gun in the safe.
You would have 3 rifle classes & 4 ammo categories, the variations seem endless.

There are numerous Targets below, in PDF format: (Once it opens, click on the "Download File Now". It's a grey button with green writing).

Version 2 is here. In Black & White is here. Version 3 (Trimguy's head shots ) is here. Version 3.1 here.

Extra tough Head Shots are here: .75 M.O.A. & .5 M.O.A.

The Ex-wife (a.k.a. Battleaxe ) is here. The Rat Pack is here.

Low power Scope version is here.

25 Yard IRON SIGHTS ONLY is here. 25 Yard Head Shots for IRON SIGHTS ONLY are here & here.

Tougher Double Kill Zone Targets are available too. Happy Rats. Prarie Dogs. Ducks. Also the extra tough Duck Beak Double Zone and the Baker's Dozen.

Pretty safe to say there is no interest in the Superstock Bolt section. I tried it today at 100 with my CZ 452 17hmr Leupold 6.5-20x variXIII in buffeting wind & couldn't get all six!

I shot the GH targets Komi made yesterday with my American in .22lr off my bipod and with no rear support, took me four tries to get four hits, with the rifle zeroed on the Bench Rest it was hitting a bit low at 50 yards off the bipod.

It might be doable at 75 yards but at 100 yards I'd almost have to see it to believe it, maybe with some practice. The .17's would be a little easier but not much.

Man I couldn't do it at 100 with my CZ 17hmr today-the wind was the spoiler. I thought it would be easy.
Thats good shooting GMD1950, what ammo did you use? I had a heck of a time finding hunting ammo that would do it in the Superstock auto version. I think 75 yards would be the real fun distance with a 22LR.
I thought this would be cake for my 22mag too Fr3dB3ar (Anschutz) but after getting my butt kicked with my CZ 17hmr I'm not so sure.
Me & my CZ got spanked today, that wandering P.O.I. drove me nuts.
You watch, Fr3dB3ar will do it easy with his .22mag at 100 just to rub it in. Fr3d, your name is wierd to type, what made you think of that?

Chromie, I don't know if the 50 yard game will be hard enough for some of these guys, GMD1950 got it as soon as he corrected for the lower P.O.I. with the bipod. I guess I could put the 22lr bbl back on Droopy the annoying 77/22 & try it, but it doesn't even shoot target ammo well at 50. I might send it to Randy or Nemo and get it doctored.

Actually he did a fine job. I just noticed that the PD kill zone is 1/4" smaller than the Squirrel Popper which I was using. I can see why this would be a killer at 100! I don't know if Droopy the 77/22 will be up to it at 50!

I live in Michigan, shoot a longbow or recurve and my name is Fred. So my archery friends started calling me fred Bear. Well you know for online stuff you need a name that nobody else wants to use if you want to use it for everything you do IE: online gaming, emails, log ins etc. One of my L33T friends was doing something similar with his name, so that's how this started. So far it works. I'm pretty sure so far...if you see fr3db3ar online somewhere....it's me

Winchester SS Hp's on those targets, sitting using my bipod just like I'd be doing going after a Ground Hog usually, I had just sighted in my American with a Intensity 6.5-20x scope replacing the 3.8-12 Intensity that was on it. If you're willing to spend the time and money, someone will get it done at 100 yards, but if they're honest it won't happen quickly or cheaply. True field position shooting is a whole new ball game to even shooting off something like a picnic table or such. Chromie laid out some proposed "rules" in the semi-auto section that I went by. Prone off a bipod would likely be the easiest way to go, but my old knees and back and C5/C6 in the spine say "not just no but heck no"!! Fun game, well worth the time and effort to teach a man his limitations if nothing else, if you find it easy then you're a heck of a fine shot.
