Chief Dave--

I agree with everything you said and respect your experience. The only reason I am shooting a .22lr pistol at 100 yards is BECAUSE it is so hard. The .17 HMR is doubtless the caliber to use or the .22 magnum. (I think the .17HMR because of all the interest.)

However, I have a theory about .22lr machines. I think they are WAY over-built for the caliber, not only the match rifles, but even my beautiful Volquartsen pistol. I cannot argue or denigrate the incredible technology that goes into the design and manufacture of these firearms, I am just saying (well, my theory says, anyway) that a single shot, bolt action firearm with everything in the world done to the barrel to damp oscillations and other things is over-kill for the tiny .22lr round. .22lr ammunition simply does not produce the stress (or so my theory goes) that a more powerful round does.

If I am proven wrong--and I have spent thousands trying to do just that and hope to do so (one way or the other) next spring-summer--so be it. In the meantime, no one appears interested in shooting against me at 25 yards (ESPECIALLY), 50 yards, or 100 yards. This is not meant to be a tribute to me. I think that if you carefully think about the firearm and place it into its IDEAL niche, then that is all it takes and anyone can do it . . . plus ammunition testing for YOUR firearm, breathing, heart-rate, scope, blah, blah, blah. But you know all that. (I have the LEAST experience at 50 yards.)

I will watch with interest your .17HMR posts. I want one REAL bad! But, I THINK I have stressed the .22lr cartridge just about to the limits of its practical ability. I need to finalize that before moving onward and upward! In doing so, I might learn something and that is my true goal.

Humbly,

--Bill

Nic responded today. Here is his response . . .

Dear Bill,

This is a pistol we stopped building approx. 10 years ago. We are looking at offering a new pistol for 2008 that would also have a built in laser.

Best Regards,
Nic
If he makes it, I will probably buy it.

I had estimated that it was about 10 years old. I look forward to trying it out...but I'm sure it can exceed my abilities...

Shamus, very nice looking setup. What model VQ is it i.e. 22lr, 17HMR?

Also, what tuner are you using and has it improved the accuracy? I was thinking of getting a Hoehn for my Deluxe but been holding off since it shoots so well.

RF

It's a 17HMR. Tuner is a Hoehn shown in the pic.
At 100yds it does make a difference but only if your on a decent rest.

what year did you shoot the world record with this rifle? i've been looking and can't find it anyplace on the records. i'm not saying you didn't do it, but what class and what year did you do it? the current record holders are noplace near the .0's at 100 yards. if you don't mind post the class and were the record is recorded so people can see it. that is a amazing 100 yard group with a .22lr. thank you.

I've been shooting 22 RF's at 100 yds for many years with good target rifles like Winchester 52's, Remington 40 X's, and Anschutz 54's, using the best match ammo, all I can say is any 22 Rimfire group shot at 100 yds in the 0's in any kind of "registered" match, which is the only way a "World Record" should be accepted, is either extreme LUCK and will NOT be repeated, or just Advertising BS.
A .059 group for 5 shots with any RF at 100 yds is just not going to happen. I would bet it cant be done again, especially with a RF semi.

i noticed it was shot with a hmr. does anybody know any sanctioned matches that have a class for a hm2? i know of none myself. i don't know, he might have done it, but i'd have to be there to see it done. i'm in very serious doubt right now myself. i'm not calling the man a lier by any means. hey he could have done it one time. anything is possible. i just want to know where the world record is recorded so we can put any doubt to rest. if it's not recorded don't advertise it becuase it's not a world record.

Joe,
Like I said on benchrest.com, nothing wrong with shooting a 1/2 at a 100 using a Kimber, that's .500, but we are talking .059 at a 100 with a semi, I still say no way.
