Eley Standard from CMP

Log in to see fewer ads
I got an email from the CMP last night. One of the items was advertisement for Eley CMP Standard for $354.95/case of 5000. This calculates out to about 7.1 cents per round.

There is a limit of 2 cases per person per year, and you must be a member of a CMP affiliated club to take advantage of it. Here is the description:

Quote:
ELEY CMP standard ELEY in conjunction with the CMP developed an accurate round packaged in a bulk pak. ELEY CMP standard features a paraffin wax coating to allow proper functioning through multiple .22LR firearm platforms. It will still be incredibly accurate compared to other ammo at this price point. ELEY CMP standard is available exclusively through the CMP. 40 grain 1090 fps Must be a member of an affiliated club. **Limit 2 cases per individual per year. Free S&H to all contiguous US states HI and AK call for S&H rates.
I don't know anything about this ammo, but this sounds like a decent deal for some quality ammo.

Anyone ever used this? What's the real story?

I have bought 2 cases so far...

I have bought 2 cases so far. First case I split with a friend. Then about 8 months later I bought another case. I like it. I shoot a lot of Wolf Match Extra and SK Rifle Match which I purchased some years back. All shoot about as well.

I bought 2 boxes of 500 at a gun show for 45.00 each.
I bought 1 box. went home and shot a target. It shot so good without flyers and tight groups.... I went back to the gun show . Bought the other box.

I found it on the internet and figured 45.00 was fair when you figure shipping.
354.95 a case of 5000.
1 box of 500 is 35.00. I payed 45.00. Not too bad.
Great ammo.

Interesting comparison of it versus 55 other brands below. Pretty good results at 50 yards, kind of fell off at 100. https://www.accurateshooter.com/guns...mparison-test/

I bought a case of this last year. It shoots like decent quality mid-grade ammo from my rifles. Think of it as an Eley Target bulk pack.

I use this ammo for practicing instead of using my Eley Match and Tenex.
I think for the money it's shoots good. The POI is close to the other Eley I shoot.

Here are some targets I shot at 50 yards, with my Anschutz 54, In the first target 5 of the 8 groups of the Eley cmp ammo, I can cover with a dime. The second target is showing it next to some other ammo. I may order another case....

Is there anywhere semi-legit to order a brick? I like the CMP, I would like to support everything they do, but a case of ammo which my rifles may not like, are stopping me.

A bit of nostalgia along similar lines:
Back in 1978 bought 2 10,000 round cases/wooden crates of what was advertised as 'military overrun training .22 LR training ammuntion'.

One crate was Eley and when opened the crate the ammunition was bulk packed and exposed to the touch, just piled in the crate. I've been shooting it ever since, though not much left these days. Have shot a lot of other brands of bricks over the years also. The Eley ammo shot/shoots very well, In a Steyr Zephyr, from a solid bench, it will consistanly hit empty .40 S&W brass out to 35 yards and beyond. The Eley has worked in Marlin 39A's, CZ Scout, Ruger Bearcats, Anschutz 1418 and several other types of .22 irons.

The 2nd crate is marked Kynoch and when removed the lid from the wooden crate there is a sealed sardine can, typical of the British. I've not broken the seal on that sardine can yet and it's still inside the wooden crate!

Cost back in 1978 was $100.00 per crate and $50.00 each for shipping/freight. From the olden days of Shotgun News and J&G Sales.

I use the Eley for practice as it has same POI as the Tenex, Match and R50 that we use for the serious comps. It is reliable, cheap and also makes for good club ammo where I shoot. Just don't expect it to do the impossible and group like the higher grade stuff.

There are several threads like this one. I asked a while back as well. Never did pick any up due to health/$$ issues.

Google tells me Palmetto had it briefly back in 2017 and never restocked. You might inquire if they plan to re-stock ever.

Place called Cardinal seems to have it now ~$42/brick+$30 flat rate shipping.
(ouch!)

There's no way I'd pay that for a brick of ammo unless it was of known good quality.

I just got an email from the CMP custom shop regarding work on an M1917 I plan to get rebarreled. My reservation just came up. I might ask them if I could get a brick shipped back with the rifle for a reasonable cost.
