Going to Lake Tahoe and Yosemiti - advice

Log in to see fewer ads
November 17 to Dec 1. Plan on free climbing El Capitan. I've never been in that neck of the woods. Will likely fly into Reno. Sister has a time share there. Tahoe.

Anyone been? Recommendations? What about the weather? I like doing it all....will hike as much as possible depending on how I feel after all this cancer treatment business. Photography will be important also as I explore. Wife will be joining me a week later. Looking for advice from those that are familiar with the place. Will fly back out of San Francisco as she has a time share there too. Probably won't go as far north as were did last time. Almost to Oregon....man, I need some of those Redwoods in my yard. 1917

Edit: Yepper, had the wrong date.

Get a redwood pinecone and throw it in a small fire. The heat opens em up to reseed. Keep us up to speed how its growing.

Back to the topic of fall in the high country.

You're going to do
WHAT?

Have you not heard of gravity, and it's terminal effects on a human body after it falls a hundred or so feet?

You might want to hike the back side of Half Dome?

If you fly into Reno you can drive Hwy 50 to get to the south shore of Lake Tahoe. This is where the hotels and casinos are located. You can drive around the lake. On the north shore is Tahoe city. This is the busiest areas on the north shore, but it isn't nearly as busy as the south shore. You can drive around the lake in a couple of hours.

If you're in Reno take Hwy 80 west to Boomtown. There's a Cabela's there with a decent gun library.

If you drive from Reno to Yosemite its about a 150 mile drive. You leave Reno and head south on Hwy 395 S, then follow it until you get to Hwy 120 W. If the weather permits, its about a 3 hour drive. If you are going to Yosemite lodging is very limited. Year round reservations are required. Call ASAP since it is usually full year round. When the snow sets in they close off sections of Yosemite.

Driving back from Yosemite to San Francisco is about a 3 1/2 hour drive, traffic permitting.

Good luck with the planning.

You're going to the high Sierras in December?!?
If you're used to snow, and lots of it, fine. If not, you'd better rethink this. Tioga pass is often closed by early December - although you might get lucky. Even if there's no snow yet, it will be bitter cold, probably with a nice wind to help it along, esp. in the high country. I'm not sure the park issues wilderness permits under those circumstances - better check that out before you go.

If you do go, check out the ghost town of Bodie on the eastern side of the Sierras - which may very well be snowed in too by that time, in any event it will be COLD.

Sequoia National Park & Kings canyon, see the largest tree in the world. Perhaps a loop into Death Valley and sin city. For me it was an expectation game. I expected more of Yosemity and was delighted to be surprised with the other locations.

The roads are closed becasue the typical coastal wall flowers cannot handle the snow. You need to pack chains and rent a 4wd. Snow shoes. I snuck past one road block and was fined for my trouble. Came around another way. The snow is impressive, like driving in a tunnel! Not so much in Yosemite as the other two places. Real high country. It is all good and on such a grand scale. What we call mountains back east are mere foot hills.

+1 on Sequoia and King's Canyon - especially the latter. Very unspoiled and very beautiful.

And December is the PERFECT time to visit Death Valley - just watch for snow in the Panamints, we always went around into the east entrance for that reason.

Rocktober is the preferred month for tackling El Capitan.

The hike on the back side of Half Dome is strenuous but made easier using steel cables as handrails and widely-spaced wooden treads. These are dropped at the end of summer (not sure of the date). Itís a long day trip, better if you overnight. We were guided by Yosemite Conservancy. Highly recommended.

And do it MUCH BETTER than these Peeps:

How many people have died climbing El Capitan?
Five people have died in climbing accidents on El Capitan since 2013. In all, Farabee said, 31 of the 120 climbers who have died in the park since 1905 have died on the famous granite monolith.Jun 10, 2018
