Matching serial numbers

I have a question regarding matching the serial number on the bolt to the serial number on the action of a 40 x rimfire. The serial number is usually found where on the bolt and how is it applied? Is it stamped, etched or what? Thanks, Ron.

bolt SN is on the bottom of the bolt, applied with an electric pencil.
Often the bolt will only have the last 4 digits of the SN engraved.

Are we talking 40xb sporter repeater, 40x target rifle(722), 40 xb target, or 40 xr sporter, 40 xr target? On the sporters it has been proven they are marked in several locations with different combinations of numbers. They are marked differently depending on the production period and block.

matching serial numbers

Thanks for the responses. What brought this about was while at the range, I looked at a very nice 40 x in an Edge stock. The 4 digits of the serial number along with a circled C were stamped not etched on the underside of the bolt handle. I was wondering what that was about. Ron
