Question Muzzle/Crown Appearance

Log in to see fewer ads
I cleaned my 795 yesterday and noticed that the muzzle/crown looks a little unusual.

I have firearms in the white, but most are blued. The Marlin appears to be in between, almost like there are different materials in the barrel.

Now, my eyes are not the best with things up close. With that in mind, any input that might shed light on this would be appreciated.

The rifle shoots very well and I do not see any damage to the crown, just what looks like a spline of different material being used in the center of the barrel.

Could it have been sleeved in the past?

This is the answer to the question... It's all one material, carbon steel.

Isn't that just a ring where the bluing has been burned away from the blast?

Since I purchased the rifle brand new, it has not been sleeved unless Marlin does that during production.

If the pattern I see is just where the blueing has burned away, it is the first time I have ever seen a distinctive pattern on any firearm's muzzle. With less than 300 rounds down the pipe it indicates to me that Marlin did a poor job of blueing the barrel.

I have a few rifles that have thousands of rounds down the pipe, use ammunition that travels close to 3000 FPS, and the muzzles still look like new.

My muzzle at 400-ish

Hi Nick - I was intrigued by your post and went to look closely at my muzzle of my 60. Its a Mayfield from 2014 but only has about 400 rounds. I bought it NIB in July. I took some pics of the muzzle as it sat, then cleaned it w-alcohol. The powder residue looked like discolored metal, but scraped off with my fingernail, then alc removed it all.

I appreciate your post FastEddie. Finally got a chance to take another look at the muzzle with a magnifying glass and found that a little work with my Big45 pad and a little oil removed the residue and the muzzle looks normal now.
Guess I was too fast to knock Marlin quality control and should use the magnifying glass more. Might even get a larger one, too.
Even under magnification, the pattern was distinct. I used a brass dental pick and remove most of it and then the Big45 pad to clean up the remainder.
Thanks for the input, sir.
