I do appreciate the offer though.

To all the other responders- THANK YOU for your time and input.

I’m learning a lot from your posts which was the real intent of this thread.

I had been under the impression that .17HMR was more accurate than .22LR, on average. Myth dispelled.

Much appreciated-

Please- school me on the available choices- .17HMR, .17HM2, .17WSM.... please educate me on these.

I’d like pros/cons, ammo availability, and recommended manufacturers to look at. I’m not looking to spend a bunch here, just want something accurate and reliable to try.

17WSM: highest power, limited ammo choices, limited rifle choices. If you want to reach out and touch larger varmints, great choice.

17HMR: high power, widest range of ammo choices (although everything other than Winchester is made by CCI, and the Winchester I've tried has shot like garbage). Good to excellent accuracy, plenty of quality rifles to choose from. I have 4 of these. Plenty of reach to 100y and beyond.

17HM2: lower power, sweet shooter, ammo can be hard to find. Some options for chambering, including some good deals on high quality used rifles. Eley made some match grade ammo for a while, but it's out of production and not easy to find. But the other two never had a match grade ammo option.

Overall I'd select 17HMR over and over because of availability in ammo and quality rifles.

I have a CZ 455 walnut stocked heavy barrel varmint in .17 HMR. My buddy and I never shoot it at 50 yards because the groups are too small to measure and it is a waste of ammunition. At 100 yards it will always shoot into 1 1/4 inches with five shots and often less. We have practice golf balls hung at 100 yards and we can hit them every time from the bench.

CCI's A17 ammunition is a good round. It delivers 2660 feet per second in autoloading rifles and apparently is up around 2900 feet per second in bolt actions. That is getting close to .17 WSM velocity.

I too have the 455 varmint 17hmr,and just as stated above, it can be boringly accurate at the range. Challenging it and myself,I use the stickies for covering holes at 100yards. Also have the 527 varmint in .223,it is also a Very sweet rifle. Handloads can make 5 shot group all touching
