Makeshift Benchrest

Anyone ever tried using a scissor jack and front rest pad as a makeshift benchrest with any success (you know, when no one else is looking)?

I would have concerns that it would not be stable enough with such a small base. I think since the caldwell rock JR front rest is purpose built for shooting and less then $30 including shipping and the top bag that one would much better served going that route.

I made one. Attached the scissor jack to a piece of iron to make it more stable. It worked fine for vertical adjustment. There are some examples on the Internet which I copied. Not that good for horizontal. I replaced mine with a Caldwell BR. The horizontal adjustment ability on it is worth the money for the shooting I do- mainly shoot on my home range for accuracy and load testing. Saves having to move rear bag and seems to give more consistent results. The homemade was fun to build and worked okay until I started shooting more groups per target.

Being from an automotive background I welded a small flywheel that was destined to the scrap pile to the base of the jack . The jack was a Japan built from a Honda smooth as glass with no slack when adjusting . Used it for years . I believe it still resides at the small club range at Warm springs hunting property in north central California. Cheers !

If you have to buy the jack and bag it would be better to by the Caldwell. The one I saw was used one time and replaced with a real rest.

Caldwell makes a few front bench rest: Rock Jr., Deluxe, BR Competition. I have the Jr. and the BR. I like them both - they have served me well.

I agree, i have the rock BR and have been very happy with it especially given the price. I got mine along with a caldwell rear bag for $100 shipped which I felt was a great deal. It was a special from midway which i have seen come up several times now.

As other members have said, numerous cheap front rests available suitable for informal shooting/pinking.

End of day its a personal/budget choice and largely depends on what type of accuracy you are chasing.

Each to their own - If you like jacks, Lyman make a front bag jack.
