Bought a Mossberg Model 46 BS

at a local shop today. Not the greatest condition but it'll clean up OK. It came with a Mossberg No. 4 rear peep sight, not installed. The front sight is the one with the four interchangeable objectives, though it is missing the hood, I'll be getting one of those. The rear barrel sight is the interesting Mossberg 2A with the thumbscrew adjustable windage and elevation. The buttplate has a trapdoor, I assume for a cleaning kit? The barrel and receiver are drilled for scope mount blocks, blanking screws are in place at this time.

It was a good day at that shop, I got a second call from them today, four 3/4" scopes had come in, one is a Weaver B4 El Paso, there is a JC Higgins M36, a Swift No. 600, and a Tasco #601E, all for $60. I like the 3/4" scopes on vintage .22s, they just look right on them.

Also in the bundle was some centerfire ammo, old reloaded 32-20, some .32 Long Colt, some 20 gauge shotgun shells on a Redhead ammo belt, vintage stuff.

The bad news today was that I learned that another local gun shop is closing, a well established decent sized shop that has had a lot of vintage firearms. At the same time some young people I know go on about buying ammo online. I've almost always bought my ammo in shops, support your local shops!

I'm not sure...

I'm not sure but I think I have to go with bone on this one. I suspect that you read that roll mark incorrectly... or this is a joke???
Would love to see a picture of the roll mark.
God Bless, Frank.

Lol, there were 3 different models with the BS lettering on the spiegel list. A 42,43 and a 46. I have never seen these models in person or even in pictures.

I had no idea it was rare. The roll mark is quite clear. I can get some pics tomorrow and email to one of you doubters if you like, I've not jumped through the hoops to post here though.

I tend to buy interesting old .22s when they show up at local shops, I paid $160 for this one. The bore appears to be OK, I haven't put a patch through it yet.

I'll clean it up and get some pics in the next few days. When I do that I'll PM you and if you'd like email some pics to you. I have a very nice Model 144, a 98% gun, you'd like to see.

Rain has prevented me from getting pics, tomorrow looks better. In the meantime I just ordered a front sight hood and mounting screws for the rear Mossberg No. 4 peep sight. I'd like to find scope mounting blocks for it.

The rifle is a Speigle (sp) variant, there were some RFC posts about those models back in 2002 or so. IIRC there would be 500 examples made with special features, if they sold well there would be more produced. The rear Mossberg 2A sight has a windage adjustment reminiscent of the Buffington sights on Springfield 1903 rifles.

I got the No. 4 peep mounted, the replacement screws were a bit long so I had to grind them down a bit, also mounted the front sight hood. The action needs a good cleaning but overall it's a pretty nice rifle.
