16.5 vs 18.5 TD barrel accuracy

My first TD is a silver/ss 18.5" standard sporter barrel. I restocked it to a Magpul TD backpacker. It gave me OK accuracy with most common ammo and because of the TD feature I figured that would be OK since its basically a type of survival gun.

One time while on Brownells I saw that they offered Ruger factory 16.5" ss threaded sporter barrels. I decided to build up another suppressor-compatible TD and picked up that barrel as well as a Brownells 10/22-clone TD receiver. I also put this build into a Magpul TD backpacker stock.

Both rifles have BX triggers, Ruger bolts as well as Kidd charging handles/spring guides, and better mag and bolt releases.

I scoped both out with QR rings and 2-7x scopes, the 18.5" with a Nikon P-22 and the 16.5 with a Weaver rimfire. Both rifles with Tactical Solutions 15 MOA scope picatinny scope rails.

I sighted both in at 25 off of a sand "Bulls Bag", and both shot well with plain-Jane Fed bulk pack, with the 16.5 a bit better. My intention was to make the final zero at 50 and that's where the two rifles separated each other.

The 16.5 continued to shoot better than expected with.3-.5" groups. The 18.5 opened up to about 1" groups.

Both TDs balance well scoped with the 16.5 being a bit better. With the 2" shorter barrel the 16.5 makes a slightly better broken-down package with the Magpul stock.

Has anyone compared TDs with the two different length Ruger barrels?

I don't think barrel length has anything to do with it. One just shoots better than the other. If I had an OEM 10/22 TD that would shoot .2's @ 50 yards I would hold on to it for dear life. I have full built custom 10/22's that have a hard time doing that, and they're not TD's. Even with Kidd triggers, aftermarket bolts, and bb's I still can't get any of my 3 TD's to shoot that good. I can get groups like that on occasion but .5 - 1" @50 is about the norm for my TD's.
