Wanting to up grade my squirrel rifle a bit with a new barrel and stock, leaning tward a 20in green mtn sporter but am open to advice, my needs are : affordable, accurate, and can eat CCIsv ammo (since its easily found).

what stock are you planning to use?

when it comes to GM barrels, I tend to gravitate towards the Heavy Taper barrels.

whether I go 17" or 19" in length depends on the style of the stock I'm using.

my most recent rifle builds are using 17" HT's in laminate Ruger Compact stocks

Not sure which stock at this point, maybe Boyds, have looked at some of the factory sporter walnut stocks, nothing over thetop, will be a working mans hunting rifle.

Ive never been down this rabbit hole so really kind of in the dark, somewhat.

The 20 inch GM sporter barrel I got from Rimfire Sports is superb. But so are the Heavy Taper barrels. But the most accurate yet is the Running Boar. ,but thatís 22 inches. Pick the one you like the look of, it will be great.

The second one is the GM 20 inch and the 3rd is the 17 inch heavy taper. If I was using one for Squirrels Iíd go with the 20 inch sporter. When I let my buddy shoot it, he grinned and saidĒ this is about perfect! Itís a Ruger DSP stock, a little sanding out on the barrel channel, the barrel, and the trigger is a brimstoned tier 2 stock trigger. Also a Jwh bolt and handle. Like I said the barrel is from Rimfire Sports, best deal. And the stock and trigger from S&P , dont forget your 5% RFC code discount.

Good luck with your build, take your time shop the sales and get some squirrels

The 20' Green mtn sporter is the very barrel Ive been looking at, and from your pics it makes for a good looking rifle, may have to bite on that one.

Seems I read something about GM barrels having a Bentz chamber, do you think the chamber will be fine with CCI ammo ??

Bents chamber , so no stingers, CCI SV at 50 yards , 14x scope off a bag. It also likes Aquila SV , which is an excellent Squirrel round! Minimags too!

20" is awful long for a squirrel gun. Since you're getting a stock also, I'd get a light weight bull barrel in 16.5". I have a Kidd Ultra lite in an archangel precision stock that is light and swings really nice. It'll shoot em in the eye if you want. You have to sand the sides of the mag well to get the mags to drop, because the stock is really tight (good thing), but it is worth the effort. I have the threaded barrel because I run it suppressed. I also have one with the Tac-Sol SB-x barrel and a Hogue stock I use with the suppressor. Probably use this one the most in the field.

I tried to get the lite type , but the Ruger Lite Barrel has let me down! Thatís the Fiberglass/ Kevlar ? Stock from Brown Precision. And the CCI quiets ainít none to accurate either. I even tried shorts, but they just gummed up the moded magazine.one failure in 10 , not bad, but not good either! Back to the drawing board!

This is a no holds barred squirrel rifle! Not a heavy barrel target rifle with way too much scope on it to be practical for offhand shooting mounted in a tacticool plastic stock. Every component used to build it is top shelf. Enjoy

I've got a DSP rifle with the 20" GM fluted sporter. I like it a lot. It cut the group sizes in half at 50 yards, from the factory barrel. That's plenty good enough for squirrel skulls.

OTOH, I bought one of the Ruger RCS-2s this week, and danged if it doesn't match, and maybe beat, that DSP/GM combo, with a terrible trigger, to boot.

Sigh. Danged thing can shoot under a 1/2" with Aguila SE-HV ammo, and almost that good with CCI-SV. Oddly, it does NOT like MiniMags. First Ruger .22 I've ever seen that didn't shine with them. That's okay, though, I have a LOT of that Aguila.
