Unfired? How do you tell?

Iíve inherited a 39A Golden (1982 manuf) and I think it may be unfired, but just how can you tell? Iíve cleaned out the dust from the barrel and receiver, so I may have removed evidence, but I didnít notice anything looking like powder residue.
Anybody? Another way?

Look at the side of the hammer. Wear shows up there first.

Look at the bolt face, extractor, and extractor groove. Gunk builds up there quickly also.

Unfired? Maybe/Possibly. Fired very little? Probably

Either way just shoot it and enjoy it.

I'm not sure if you can tell it's been unfired if it was cleaned after. I look at the wear on the sides of the hammer and lever where they rub against the frame. Also look for other handling marks. I always look for flaws and point them out to the seller.

You are correct. Most of them will show wear in the side of the hammer in short order. It is kind of like cylinder lines on some revolvers.

If it nhas been fires a lot, there will also be wear lines on the top of the bolt. All of them are fired at the factory, so finding one unfired by the owner is hard to tell. You could shoot one 20 times and there will be very little signs of any wear, and if it was cleaned well, you will not see it. Unfired or not, it is not going to change its value unless you are the original owner and it is still in the original box. Take it out and enjoy it. They are meant to be shot.

1982 - If unfired/cleaned in 37 years, packing grease/lube would be congealed and still in the action.
That along with other metal movement noted above are good indicators.

It was my brotherís rifle, he probably shot it a few times and after that just admired it, which was his pattern. If it doesnít hurt the value Iíll play with it and just enjoy. Tíaint much of any marks on the hammer, the lever has some at the pivot, thatís it. Thanks for all your replies!
