Does any one have any experience using EPI's Insta-Blak 333 or Van's Instant Gun Blue? I'd be interested to hear about any pros\cons, ease of use, and end results. Anyone?

I've used about every cold blue on the market and the best I think is G96 and Brownells 44-40. Van's gave weak results IMHO

Van's gun blue................

I used Van's for a while and got pretty good results, for the last 2-3 yrs. I have been using Oxpho blue and have been very pleased with the results.

Some metals seem to work better with differing formulas. I have tried most, and have settled on Oxpho and Dicropan as my best performing touch-up blues. Good prep goes a long way toward a successful experience.

My experiences

Have used Van's blue on a few re-bluing of barrels projects...streak free and easy to work with & to go back and re-apply later with out much effort. The depth of the bluing tends to be lighter on my projects.
I also use the Oxpho blue cream and really like the results. Have also used some Birchwood casey blue...it seems to me that each project application is different because of the metallurgy involved so it's nice to have a few varieties of cold blue around to work with. It can be somewhat frustrating at times to get the results you can be happy with. Just my 2 cents from my experience. I am sure others have their thoughts as well. good luck on the project. Give us a follow up on what results are for your project and chemical plz.

I just had a new crown cut on a Anschutz barrel so I re-blued the crown ..after de-greasing with 92% alcohol...I heated up the barrel with a hair dryer for 3 minutes and started with Van,s bluing liquid applied for 2 min. -then 2 min of heat again - 2 minutes of Van's and same process again - 3x...results were not dark enough against the barrel bluing ....so I switched to Oxpho blue cream and repeated 3X more of heat and bluing with the oxpho for 2 minutes-- ....results was a very acceptable match with the bluing color...just one guy's experience. FWIW It is not a exact science.
