Looking for a new 22 lr benchrest rifle

I recently retired and have been shooting for fun, hunting, and competition for 50 years. I have competed in high power service rifle, F Class FTR, and Precision Pistol (Bullseye). I have also reloaded for 45 years. I am not a beginner with firearms. With my recent retirement I am looking to spend more time at the range. I currently have two rimfire rifles I shoot off the bench - a Remington 541–T and a Ruger 10/22 with a heavy stainless barrel. I am shooting off of a Caldwell Rockrest. I know these are not high end BR setups but both shoot very accurately at 50 yards and they are fun to shoot. I am interested in having a true benchrest 22lr rifle built. I will shoot it on my own here to compete against myself and in the future in BR Matches. Can you recommend a gunsmith I can contact to have a gun like this built? I know what the range of cost is to have a rifle like this built. I have read many of the posts similar to this here and most recommend buying a used rifle off of the classifieds. I prefer a new rifle and developing a contact with a builder. Why? I feel if a BR, or any rifle for that matter, is a true “high end shooter” it is unlikely to be posted in a classified ad as other local shooters would want it and it would be easy to sell. I don’t want a rifle that is a problem to someone else to become my problem. I’m the same way with cars, houses, etc. can you recommend a builder pr two that I could contact to get on their list? I appreciate the help! Thank you!

I would advise you to attend the Wis. ARA State Tournament at the VanDyne club next weekend. If you want good info you can't beat getting together with the competitors there.

Killough shooting sports will build you one. Stiller at Holeshot May be building rifles now. Penrod builds them. Gorham is a good one.

Another option is to look at a used 22lr benchrest rifle built by a reputed "Name".

You can get in and test the waters without completely breaking the bank... Then - if you love it, you can upgrade...

Often used BR rifles are considerably less expensive than having a new bespoken rifle built.. And you can look up it's track record and get some info on what ammo it liked and such.

For example - One of the Bill Calfree guns come up for sale recently. I bet it would run competitively and for a whole lot less than building a new one from scratch.

The chances of any new build being a "high end shooter" are slim. All the "problem" rifles for sale were once new builds with the same chances. I would rate ammo and shooter skills ahead of the rifle.

Guys, I have already been in contact with BayfieldHunter and will be speaking with him more next week.
He lives about 20 miles from me, and now has my phone number.

See if you can find a Suhl for sale. They dont need any 'replacing'.

Most matches will have a shooter or two w/ a gun for sale or know of someone who is letting one go. You even get to shoot before you buy that way.
