These games are tough with a stock rifle.

Trying to make the Sawdust 1/4" challenge.... I almost made it... and on average - it would be in... but all 4 groups have to be under 1/4" at 25 yards....

Order of business:
1. Trigger is too heavy
2. Sort out the stock bedding. Does it want to be semi-floated or pressure bedded or full length bedded? Only testing will tell me.

Anyway: Marlin XT-22 stainless with a standard Marlin laminate stock. No other work yet.

Here's a 4 group card. 5 shots each. 0.222, 0.242, 0.251, and 0.263
So close! The average is 0.245".... but out is out.

Try adjusting your scope a few clicks in elevation, and windage. So your group is of to one side, and slightly high, or low. It looks like your shooting out your aiming point.

Get more ammo and keep trying. You are really close, you can do it.

I think I figured it out. And I made it!!!

Bullets Over-lubing the barrel.

It was weird.

The first several shots off a clean barrel would sort of move around till it settled down.

Then - it would shoot super tight for one group....

Then after 7-10 rounds it would start to open up and the groups sort of went horrible. Over 3/8" to 1/2"...

The weird thing.... I eventually figured this out.... Shoot 2 rounds of cheap hi- velocity ammo (Blazers or Minimags) down the pipe and I could go back to the good greasy ammo and shoot an itty bitty 5-shot group.

Thanks

I hate that. Most of the time I'm lucky & can test before buying (or at least I used to). I stay away from that symptom. Sometimes you might luck out & find an ammo that doesn't do that. Everything I own needs a few shots to settle after cleaning, but that's it, I hope you can figure it out, or just enjoy the rifle the way it is.
Good Luck.
