617 changed to DAO

I had an Apex Mass Hammer installed and some trigger work done on my 4" barrel 617. It now has a very, very smooth, slightly less than 8lb trigger pull and is double action only. First trip to the range with it today was a ton of fun. 100% reliable through 150 rounds of CCI SV and Eley Force. Very smooth trigger, it will take some time to get used to it.
This will be my steel challenge revolver.

Now I need to find a holster.

Speed Beez makes a holster for it that is compatible with the optic.

Yes they are. I was also looking for a leather holster for my 6” with a Vortex Venom. No luck with that yet

There is a kydex and leather holster guy near me. I'll talk to him and see what he can do. My 6" barrel 617 also has an optic as does my 1911 22 (it also has a compensator). Lots of non-standard holster needs.

Please let me know if you find any information. Thanks

Yours is the only other one I've seen.

The other one is in my safe. Randy built it for me about 7 years ago. It's the revolver I use the most.

Who did the revolver work?

Hi Kidneyboy,
Please tell me who did the DA only work on your S&W?
Thank you very much.

I now have about 500 rounds of CCI mini mags through it and the trigger has gone from really good to outstanding. Very smooth and fast. There was the tiniest bit of a wall at first and that disappeared almost right away.
Pilgimwoman - I had it done at MJ's Gunshop in Wisconsin. Have had 4 or 5 trigger jobs done there. Also had a trigger job done on my other 617 a while back. The single action trigger on that one is in the 1lb range and the double action around 8lbs.

Can you still lock the hammer back or did he cut off the double action sear?

It is now double action only. Take a look at the Apex site for a look at the actual hammer mechanism they make. The gunsmith installed the kit and did a lot of polishing and spring adjusting..

Why eliminate the single action function? Just curious.

It's a race gun and no need for single action.

The Apex Mass Hammer allows for a lighter, smoother DA trigger pull.

To be honest, it's now different from my other revolvers and that makes it a little more interesting to shoot. It's the opposite of shooting a single action revolver.

I was thinking of going with a DAO hammer, but tonight I installed a Wolff Power Rib standard weight main spring and 13lb reduced weight rebound and the results were amazing. 2.5lb single action and smooth as butter 7.5lb double action. Like they say, perfect is the enemy of good enough.
