Lightening up a 10/22 Race Gun for SS

I am looking at building a 10/22 for steel challenger, optics division. Tfo help speed I was thinking about putting a charger barrel on the rifle with a long enough muzzle compensator or bloop tube that is pinned and tigged so that the ATF accepted barrel length is 16.25". A rifle outfitted in this fashion would be classified as a rifle by the ATF and the steel challenge rules indicate any rifle is allowed. A rifle like this would yield performance like a short barreled rifle that is legal for SS and not having to pay $200 for the ATF stamp and paperwork.

The muzzle attachment could be aluminum to keep weight down, what I have in mind is taking a piece of 3/4 inch diameter aluminum with 1/8" walls and threading the barrel to accept the aluminum tube. To reduce weight of the bloop tube numerous holes or slots would be machined. An 8" piece of 7/8-.125 aluminum tubing is about 4 ounces so holes and slits could probably bring the weight down below 3 ounces.

I have a machine shop so building the bloop tube and threading the barrel is just time no cost.

Maybe this is an idiotic idea coming from someone who has never shot a steel challenge match, not the first stupid idea I have had in my close to 60 years. I shot F-class until my neck required for me to stop and I am looking for another discipline or two to shoot.

Thanks
wade

Use the stock barrel and shoot a match, get some trigger time before mods. Look at what the competition uses, ask questions. It pays to be smarter than thow $$$ at the problem.

in theory it should be just fine, but why? Whistle pig makes 16" barrels that are 16 oz you arent going to get much lighter than that, it is a nifty idea for those who dont want an aluminium sleeved barrel though.

Most everyone uses some aluminum shrouded barrel. The most weight savings you're going to get is in your choice of stock. Blackhawk Axiom is about as light as you'll find other than building something around a PMACA chassis on a 10-22. Whistle pig is an aluminum shrouded barrel, just the same as a TacSol. You can't make a .920 all steel barrel that light. TacSol and Volquartsen barrels both clock in around 15oz. Both shoot more accurately than a factory barrel. For steel challenge, there is no downside there.

And I misread the comment above. Whistlepig, Tacsol, or VQ are all much lighter than a factory steel barrel is.

I have that short TacSol barrel with a barracuda stocked 10/22 and it is very light and scary accurate.
With my Cascade suppressor all you hear is the bolt moving
