Match Rifle Balance

I have been looking at Anschutz match rifles. Looking, not buying. I notice they are rather heavy with rather long barrels.

I think I understand why they are heavy and why they have long barrels, but not having ever handled one I am curious. Where is the balance point desired on a match rifle intended for position shooting?

It's personal preference. Some like quite a bit of forward weight, others like the balance point closer to the support hand position. It can also vary according to position. This is one of the reasons for all the adjustability of the stocks.

As above it depends, as 3-P accessories like metal hook butts, palm rests, and extension tubes change the balance. However, in my experience most Anschutz rifles in Prone trim (no palm rest) and with no extension tube, will balance a little ahead of the receiver. A wood stocked rifle will balance further forward than a Supermatch with its aluminium butt assembly.

I think tastes have changed. I have a 1960s manual that recommends a 2lb bias at the muzzle for standing (it's quite doctrinairre in other matters). However, today most position shooters I know want the muzzle to be less heavy. Weight at the muzzle does slow movement, but it can be tiring, and harder to control.
