Kneeling?

Is kneeling position allowed in CMP in lieu of the sitting position? I have seen references to kneeling on line but I did not see it in the rules.

Also, why would one kneel instead of sit since sitting is more stable?

Body composition has a lot to do with this. Some folks just have too much body (stomach) in the way to get into a comfortable sitting position. Also, occasionally a person has back problems that preclude a sitting position.

I can't answer the first part of your question.

kneeling CMP?

It is my understanding it is allowed in CMP. We allow it at our Club's matches. Also a kneeling roll is allowed though I'm unsure on the diameter.

I have a replacement hip, and need the other done. Seated is agony for me.

Kind of an old post, but this has recently become an important topic for me.

The latest CMP rules do allow kneeling. Understandably, the CMP literature addresses sitting positions much, much more than kneeling. So, why shoot from kneeling? The overwhelming reasons are speed and simplicity.

I like sitting just fine, but it seems to require too many coordinated movements and adjustments to get it right. That’s fine when I have plenty of time. I just don’t buy it as a hasty position. Kneeling, on the other hand, is ready made for rapid fire. I’ve been practicing it over and over as a way to get both my sight picture and that first round out sooner. With some quality dry fire and a nice long range session, you should see immediate results. But that’s just the beginning. I have been and plan to continue putting in a lot more dry fire and range time.

Kneeling’s simplicity lends itself to fast shooting. Just drop down on your right knee, put the back of your left elbow flat on top of your left knee, acquire your sight picture, and press the bang switch. In competition or a Project Appleseed shoot, it pays to acquire NPOA during the stage prep. Then stand up without moving your left (lead) foot, and you are ready to rock on that stage.

Competitions and clinics aside, if we wish to be all-around marksmen, shouldn’t we train at all the shooting positions - standing, sitting, kneeling, and prone? What do you guys think? I think so.

I am considering kneeling instead of sitting this summer. The time required to get down into position makes me rush my shots. I'd actually consider sitting for slow fire and kneeling for rapid fire , if legal. Once I get situated, sitting is still steadier for me than kneeling

I always found kneeling to be much more stable than sitting (and faster, as described above)

Sadly, I fear it may have more to do with the amount of "padding" on my posterior than any inherent advantage of the position...

PAndy - my thoughts exactly. I’m planning on doing my first CMP Rimfire Sporter matches this summer, and am seriously considering sitting for slow fire, kneeling for rapid fire. I know that all the top shooters sit, but for me it is too contrived and cumbersome to get into position quickly. Let’s see how our experiments turn out this shooting season.
