10/22 Magnum with .17wsm Barrel

Log in to see fewer ads
Hello,

I am new to the website and have been trying to find a thread about this for about an hour, so I apologize if I am asking a question that’s already out there.

Does anyone have any experience in converting a 10/22 magnum to a .17 wsm? I see plenty of threads below with converting a 10/22 mag to 17HMR, but could not find one about 17wsm.

Any help (or what to search to see an already existing thread) would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Agreed, but I'll give Silversnipe2 credit for being the first guy to publicly consider it.

Isn't there a semi-auto 17wsm out there as an alternative? Or am I crazy?

I was really just trying to see if there was a less expensive option than the Volquartsen that wasn’t in an AR platform. Thanks for the info guys!

JARD has one coming out and it's less expensive than the Volquartsen.

I read that if if you put a 17HMR barrel on a 10/22 mag they tend to blow up. They can go thousandsof rounds between blow ups and I hear it's pretty unpleasant.
So if some one were to put a 17WSM on a 10/22 mag it would really blow up in an even more spectacular manor.

If you want an auto 17HMR just get a savage A17. The accuracy on mine is great, much more than what I expected from a semi auto. The magazines kind of suck.
If some one were to mod the A22 and A17 to accept ruger mags they would probably make a fair amount of money.

And I have no doubt whoever wrote or said what you heard had heard it from somebody who heard it from somebody else and none of them ever had a .17HMR conversion. The dreaded "kaboom" , as they are known, is caused by operator error/ignorance. You HAVE to keep the chamber clean on those conversions. If there has ever been one of them go "thousands of rounds between blowups" it would be a miracle. First off, they don't "blow up". They have an out-of-battery ignition due to a chamber fouled with ignition debris preventing the round from chambering fully. This is particularly problematic with a bottle-neck cartridge like the HMR but it can happen with a .22lr. Remember, the 10/22 is a blow-back action which, by design, leaves debris in the chamber. My HMR and HM2 conversions get a Boresnake pulled through them about every 50 rds. The one time I forgot to do that, I had one of those "kabooms" at about 80-90 rds which was a tough lesson. No injury, magazine completely destroyed, laminate stock split but repairable and still in service. No other damage. The gun has run perfectly ever since I got schooled. The gun was not at fault.

I prefer to make my decisions based on solid info rather than rumor. Having a "kaboom" is pretty solid, I'd say. Knowing what caused it helps prevent it from happening again..........hopefully.

Not exactly, out of battery discharges were not uncommon early in the development of the 10/17, caused Ruger to drop the rifle. You can easily convert a 22 to a 17M2, but the pressure curves on the 22WMR and 17 HMR are too different to just change the spring and bolt and get a reliable, safe rifle.

Aftermarket has done it apparently in low volume, more expensive rifles.
