S&W grips.

A friend had this Smith & Wesson Model 17-6. I admired the grips and wanted some for my own 17, but diligent internet searches have turned up nothing. These are S&W grips, not aftermarket. Can anyone help?

I also have a 17-6 that is suppose to have those grips. A previous owner apparently sold the grips and replaced them with non S&W grips. I have been looking for a pair.
Those grips are difficult to find and very expensive if you do find them.

Those are factory goncalo alves grips that are referred to as finger grooved combat grips. They were sold in the 1980s also separately with a retail price somewhere in the $80s. I collect FGC, especially the square butt versions and find them comfortable and fitting my hand pretty well. Culina makes an excellent copy of the FGC out of a variety of different woods, that are better quality.

Be prepared to pay around $250 to $325 for decent FGC.

Ahrends Grips do some very similar. I bought a set for my 48, pic below. Not up to $200, in fact less than half of that according to their website http://ahrendsgripsusa.com

'Scuse the cruddy cell-phone pic.

Chris,

this is just one of the boxes of grips that I accumulated over the decades. Back when I bought my S&W K22 Masterpiece for $250 those grips were in the parts boxes at dealers and gun shows. Back then they were found for $5 and I usually got a free S&W aluminium handled screwdriver along with it.

Culina's grips are very well made and have a better fit and finish than the factory FGC grips but my favourite grips are Nills, their fit and finish is exemplary. Compared to FGC they are bargains.

Hogue makes some nice ones also, lot cheaper than originals although mine came with the little grips that nearly covered the frame.

jaruwan.p is the man to see. eBay grips from Thailand. I gave up on the American makers.

The S&W FGC grips came factory standard on my first year production Model 617 4". They look very nice and fit my hand really well. I can't hardly believe they go for those prices though.
