I see Ole' Man River feels obliged to keep taunting me with those aftermarket stocks.

Oh man, that is just gorgeous. That looks like a Boyd's stock? If you don't mind my asking, what did you do to that stock to finish it? I'm thinking of ordering one but don't know much about woodworking, and if I got a result half as beautiful I'd be happy! I was talking about ole man rivers.. I tried quoting the picture, but I guess it didn't work.

DEPUTY450, Cassings, SimonFencer, MadGrimey & All those I haven't mentioned.
Thank you for your comments and praises on the rifles I've posted within this thread. Forgive me for taunting you. It is not done on purpose.

I always order the stocks from Boyd's unfinished (VIP) and they come naturally that way from Richards Microfit, so that I can do the final sanding and finish work myself. The sanding is done up to and thru 400 grit, before the first coat is applied. The first coating will bring out any flaw/imperfection in my work that needs attention and is then corrected. A minimum of 8 coats are applied, with each coat cured for a minimum of 12 hours and then hand rubbed with 0000 steel wool or a soft Scotch Brite pad, wiped down with a tack cloth and then blown off, before the next coat is applied. The coating medium is Min-Wax Semi-Gloss Poly, as I like to see the natural figure, characteristics and beauty of the laminate/wood to come through and not be hidden. If you want a higher gloss, use the Gloss coating, which can be dulled to taste with 0000 steel wool.

Ole' Man River, your clear finishes are right up there with Tuck paint jobs.

I'll second that.

I'd love one of those stocks but I intend to hunt with this one and not make it a BR rifle.

Smile

I'm sure the person (a RFC member) that now owns that rifle is very happy and pleased that it continues to receive admiring comments.

My Rifle

I can finally classify my rifle as an Ultimate...it's now shooting like one!

Specs are as follows:

20" GM barrel
Barrel and action work by CPC
Leupold High Rings
Leupold VX-II 4x12-40
Richards stock painted by Tuck

BfishJ,

Nice looking rifle! What caliber is that in? I would like to do one in .22Mag and in stainless.

What does CPC do for improvements if I might ask?

Geez... After seeing all your pictures...
Mine doesn't even begin to classify as an "Ultimate"... BUT.....
It is MINE!!!!

Finally together.....

All-Weather 77/22 in .22 WMR.
Factory walnut stock shortened to 12 3/4" LOP.
Factory stainless trigger gaurd and hardware.
Pachmayr "small" 500B recoil pad.
Barrel free floated.
Action glass bedded.
JARD trigger.
2-7x32 Nikon ProStaff.

When I do my part**, it shoots groups of about 1/2" at 75 yards.
** No coffee. No pseudaphed.

Thanks! to everyone here for all your advice along the way!

me!

Jay:

It is a 17 hmr. Randy has an upgrade combo "Includes target crown, barrel setback, chamber reamed with a reamer with .002 smaller diameters than Rugers" The rifle started out as a VMBZ 22 mag which wouldn't shoot worth a darn so it had a "sex change" to a 17.
