I have two of the 540XR's, with a 36x Sightron on one and the original peeps on the other. Both are shooters. The scoped rifle has printed some amazing groups off of a bench at 50y and 100y. They are a little slow to warm up and really take 10 shots before they settle down to shooting. The trigger is adjustable and capable of being set for a crisp 1.5lb let off. The wood stocks are not beautiful. Some are of a blond wood that I find to be just plain ugly. Others have what appears to be a darker walnut or walnut stained stock that is somewhat better. I have one of each. Mine likes Wolf Match Extra, Lapua CX and Eley Blk. Some Winchester ammo will not fit into the tight match chamber, but that is rare. I bought my first one for $400 years ago and paid more for the nicer 2nd one. I would not sell either for less than $1k today if at all. They are not common and are capable of shooting at or near to the likes of Anschutz 54, Winchester 52, Vostok CM2. The green bull is 5sh at 50y and the grey bull is 5sh at 100y with the scoped rifle. The rifle pic is the original one with the peeps.

Beautiful rifle and great shooting. I have never ever seen a 540X or the XR in the wild. I could only get mine off of the Web. I have always wondered how much easier those xr stocks are on the bench over the 540X's.

540

I have 2, a 540XR and a 540 XR JR. Both have been used quite a bit but still perform well. Not quite at the level of the 40X I have, but still quite good.

Would love you to post some pictures of them. I did not know they made a junior. Would really like to see that one.

540XR JR

The XR JR is identical to the 540XR, but has a 12" length of pull with the adjustable buttplate fully forward. All other dimensions on the stock are the same as the 540XR and it has the exact same barreled action.
I don't have the means to post pictures at this time.

I had 2 of them over the years. 540X's. Traded them for something else. Dont even remember what. Very nice rifles. They do have to be warmed up. Took me 6 shots for them to settle in. Enjoy! I think the rear dogleg sight alone fetches almost 200$

Well I guess I got lucky a couple years ago when I bought my 540X. It didn't have the rear dogleg sight so I got it right. The lucky part is that I found the sight on flea-bay shortly after. No one bidding knew what it was for and I was able to get it for $75. What a deal. I love it when a plan comes together - I think I have heard that somewhere before. Oh well that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I gave my 540xr a good barrel and chamber cleaning yesterday then shot a couple groups, sk+ ammo at 55yds.fouler group at .7 inch then .16 and.34ctc. call me impressed. I only paid 500 bucks for the gun and scope combo and dont think I can shoot any better than that at any price.

I bought a 540XR with a very cut down stock in 2000 at a gun show for $70. I patched in a piece of wood and painted the whole stock with the granite paint. It looked good and my oldest son used it to shoot gophers for a few years. He bought his own gun and I put the gun in the safe for a few years. I then found a 541T stock on ebay. I bought it. I had the barrel cut down to 24" and re drilled for the front sight. I put the barreled action in the 541T stock and put a Leupold 3X9 EFR on it is a great gopher gun. It is modified but still says 540XR on the barrel.

I may have posted this before this is a 50 yard target, not cherry picked. shot after a sight in group. 5 shots each target in a slight breeze.

This is a very good shooting rifle. But I am wondering about bedding it? turns out after shooting this group I checked the stock and it was rocking slightly in the action. There was some old glue or something on the rifle and the holes for the action screws were full of something that kept them from bottoming out. After cleaning all that up the stock fits tight and does not rock. I am considering bedding it as well. But I probably should shoot it again first.

I was looking at it again and decided there was a little play, so I decided to pillar bed it. Then I found out the two action screws go into a recess that is metal rail at the bottom of the hole. I ended up deciding to shim it with metal foil. Now it is a very snug fit. I am satisfied Maybe I will dig out snowshoes and go to the range. We are approaching record snow depths for the month.

I bought a 540X about 2 years ago. Just got it set-up in December and it shoots extremely well. Before I shot it, I looked at the bedding and was not thrilled with the movement of the action in the stock - so I bedded the action and the first 2 " of the barrel and free floated the rest. No movement in stock now and shoots with any rimfire I own. It is on the no sell list !

Got it in Tuesday

The sights were set on 340 yards. Took several rounds to even hit the backer at 25 yds. After that, it was a simple thing to walk the sights where I wanted them.

There's four on the way to center mass, with an additional 4 in one hole when I got there .

VERRY interesting
