Ruger 96/22 96/17 Frequently Asked Questions

Log in to see fewer ads
This FAQ is for all rimfire models and calibers of the Ruger 96. It seems like there are consistently new posts about Rugers 96 series rifles that ask the same questions. Part of the problem is that it is difficult to use the RFC forum search for this model and the other part is that there just aren't a ton of these guns around. With that in mind, I've looked through all of the pages of threads in the "Ruger - Other" section and picked out the threads that are helpful. I hope to edit this FAQ and put in some notes about what each specific thread contains. It is worth noting though that these threads easily get off topic and talk about other issues related to the 96. It's worth reading alot of threads to get the general consensus of the topic. Also, please feel free to add links to things you think are important!

I was thinking posting years the various models were made and how many would be great.

Ruger Made the 96's from '96 to '07, but a friend told me this morning that they did not make that many numbers wise and that the 17 HMR was very rare and only made one or two years.

Mine was made in '07 and is as yet unfired. Do any of you guys know what years and how many 17 HMR's were made and from when to when?

If you ask Chet over at rugerforum.com he'd likely be able to tell you... I think he's the author of the RENE guide.

The thing I haven't seen here or on the Ruger forums is the barrel interchangeability of the barrels on the Ruger rifles and what needs to be done if anything to make the barrel & caliber changes. One thing that will be needed on some conversions is barrel shims.

10/22 LR & 10/17 HM2 = barrels interchange and there is the ability to change to HMR & WMR with magazine modified.

77/22 LR & 77/17 HM2 = barrels interchange and there is the ability to change to HMR & WMR with magazine modified.

96/22 LR & 96/17 HM2 = barrels interchange and there is the ability to change to HMR & WMR with magazine modified.

When fitting the model 77 with a model 10 or 96 barrel I am told it will require taking some metal off the face of the breach. This can be done by using a machine flat and very fine emery cloth or by gunsmith. I have done that type of thing many times before without a problem, but I do not recommend you do it unless you know how and what you are doing.

If any comments or I have made any mistakes here please feel free to correct me and or add any thing I may have left out.

New link for Ruger Model 96-22 instruction manual

The old link listed above is bad. Ruger has apparently removed this manual from their site.

This manual covers ALL the Model 96: Long Rifle, 22 magnum, 17 HMR, and 44 Magnum.

I was able to download it here:

Bluelixir,

Thanks for putting all that together on this model!

I have been interested in this model for along time, but never had seen one in the shops in my area.
Reading just a little of that info, it looks like there are many things that can be done to make a slick and accurate sporting rifle out of one.
I am glad the 96 has the similar barrel to receiver mounting that the 10/22 and the earlier 77/22 had, just makes working on them much easier for me.
From my reading so far on those links to posts, it appears the 96 may need a little smoothing up the action, and perhaps bumping the breach face, and barrel shoulder back some to get better groups. My 77/22 responded great with just that.
I have to look at one first hand, it may be another one of those fun freaky Ruger designs, just have to have
