I finally got around to cutting some tooling a few months back and yesterday I got around to actually molding some inserts for my dedicated 22lr upper charging handle to replace the 3D printed version I was using.

I'm pretty pleased with the results. The insert installs and removes more easily than the printed part.

As Hickok would say, life is good!

This is very cool. I've done composite materials fabrication before but have alway been interested in trying to mold something. Much appreciation for people who make their own stuff. Your part is impressive; I'm glad it works. lol hey now you get to tell people it's your own proprietary part! Kudos to you good sir for your DIY spirit. Thanks for sharing

I've never had the problem of a lodged casing, but I still think that's pretty neat.

I've never had a problem either, but then again, I only ran about 200 rounds before installing an insert.

I screwed around a bit this afternoon and pulled a couple shots with different materials today. Here's one made from rubber:

Molding things is fun. I'm going to try this part in Delrin and a glass filled polymer for evaluation before final material selection and then getting it sent out for a large run at a "real" molding shop.

Thank you! I had a bit of blind luck with this, since it was my first tooling design.

I made a few in 10% glass filled polymer. Now we're cooking with gas, folks!

Progress!

I hit a milestone and arranged to cut professional tooling for production scale molding! Thanks to all of you in this community for your encouragement that helped me to take the plunge!

Ordered! Already had one of your pressure plugs, but both the charging handle insert and the +power extractor springs are great ideas. Thank you!

I ordered a pressure plug and charging handle insert also. They should be here today. Looking forward to getting my build done. I've already go the lower built (Aero Precision), and have a Boonie Packer Better-Mag insert for it so I can use 15-22 magazines. The upper receiver (also Aero Precision) is ready except for a Schuster forward assist plug I have on order. A Lothar Walther barrel and Aero Precision floating forend are on their way also. I anticipate a lot of range time when it is done.

A lot of range time is the natural side effect of a dedicated 22lr upper! It's been the best build I've ever done for raw fun value, and I'm starting my second build with a RTB pencil barrel very soon. This upper is going to be the test bed for the bolt hold closed device I'm working on. Hopefully the time off these next two weeks will result in a lot of tinkering on that

I would be interested in your write up on the accuracy of that barrel.
