Is the bl 22 receiver grooved so that a red dot or scope can be mounted on it? I would like to buy a bl22 but my 77 year old eyes require that I need a scope or red dot.

They have a 3/8" rimfire scope rail.
On my old beater BL-22 I have a Red Dot with an adaptor so it can be used on a 3/8" rail.

It is a Primary Arms Red Dot with UTG scope rail adaptor.

Dadler, this is the Picatinny to Dovetail adapter that jstanfield and I are using.
It is made by UTG, comes in a 2 pack for about $11 on Amazon.
Pyramid Air Guns in Ohio also sells them.
They are pretty slick, and allow your dot to be as low as possible.
Many red dots come with bases meant for AR-15 use and their straight stocks. Those end up putting your dot really high up.
As you tighten up the clamp on the dot, it squeezes this adapter down on your .22's scope grooves.

Red dot sights run the gamut from a $30 Tasco or Sightmark up to a $600 Aimpoint Micro. The ones $200 and up ( like the Burris FastFire and Vortex Venom) are much more compact and have better battery life than the cheapest ones.
This Tasco was only $30 at Walmart and doesn't even need the adapter, as the clamp can flip over and do both Picatinny/Weaver or 3/8" .22 Dovetails. Kind of big on a little .22 though.

A step up is the Primary Arms Micro that jstanfield showed above on his BL-22.
The PA micros have great reviews, and good battery life, and run $90 to $120 or so depending on the model and options.
The next level of dots are the FastFire and Vortex. These sell for around $190 to $230 and are really compact, and don't overwhelm a small .22 rifle.
I have several of them, and the one I've had the longest had the battery last 5 years, I finally had to replace it last month.

If you were to get one, a nice accessory are these rubber covers from DreamPlastics. They are $13 for a 2 pack, and keep the dust and fingerprints off the glass. I believe they make them for other brand dots like the Vortex too.

If you have deep pockets, the Trijicon RMR and Leupold Deltapoint are in the $400 range, and the Aimpoint Micro is $550 plus.

If anyone has a hard time finding the UTG adapters, Hawke optics also makes some under part number 22405.
