597m trigger question

Log in to see fewer ads
I just bought this rifle on gun broker to replace a stolen one from a long time ago. long story short, the trigger sear does not engage when the trigger is held back. Does anybody know if the trigger internals for the 22lr and the 22wmr are the same? I ask because I find several sources for the 22lr trigger housing assembly, but none for th 22wmr...
I emailed Remington, they said to buy the parts from various retailers (but didn't say if the internals were the same, just buy the 22wmr trigger housing assembly, which nobody has in stock...) or take it to a gunsmith about 4 hrs away (or mail it)....
Thanks in advance
DRT

First check to see if the sear hasn't pulled loose from the glue holding it in place thus prohibiting engagement.

What Al says. But it is the spring for the sear that can cause the problem. Other than the magazine well the internals are the same as I recall. Look for spring circled in photo.

I'll take a look for this! I should clarify though, if I release the trigger, it does go back to it's "starting point."... so would it be this spring?

I haven't had one apart in awhile but as I recall the trigger return spring is in the linkage between the trigger and sear so you should have 2 different springs in there.

If the hammer doesn't engage, the hammer 'catch', whatever its called escapes me, is worn out, unlikely unless a previous owner stoned it, or, the spring that holds the sear came loose, which has happened to a few others over the years. A dab of good silicone adhesive on the spring will make it right again.
