Primer powered indoor rounds

I shoot the .22 Aguila Colibri primer powered .22lr rounds in my basement into phone books for some trigger time when I can’t get to the range. I haven’t been able to find any .22wmr versions of this ammo, so I thought I’d try to make my own.

I pulled the bullets of some CCI 40gr. Maxi-Mag ammo and dumped out the powder. I then grabbed a .22cal air rifle pellet and carefully pushed it into the primed case and seated it to the base, being careful not to disturb the priming compound. The primer-only pellet rounds worked pretty well but were a little weak compared to the .22lr Colibri rounds. I made a second batch of pellet rounds, but added 1.0gr of the factory powder before seating the pellet. This seemed to do the trick and the pellets were launched with more power and the muzzle report was more like that of the Colibri ammo.

At about 12ft, the pellet rounds grouped reasonably well and probably were getting about 500+FPS judging by how the wadcutter pellets made pretty clean holes in paper. I did try adding 2.0gr. of factory powder but it made the report a bit loud for shooting in my basement without hearing protection. With that powder charge, there was a little bit of felt recoil. No doubt it was probably as powerful (if not more) than my Gamo air rifle. Kind of an expensive way to make weak indoor rounds, but it was fun to make them and I am glad to have a solution for shooting my .22wmr revolver in the basement.
