Glass37, feel free to sign me up as a test pilot for that 20 WSM project. Heck, I'll even supply my own barrel and get Kiff to make a reamer if they'll send me cases of free 20 WSM ammo loaded with those 24gr NTX bullets launching at 3000fps. I'll probably need at least 20,000 rounds in order to do a good thorough evaluation.

Meanwhile, back on earth, In all honesty, I think Al is most likely spot on and unfortunately the 17 WSM as a whole, guns and ammo, didn't create a great deal of confidence in people. On more than one occasion I've heard a salesperson at the counter of a gun shop telling the customer the 17 WSM's tale of woe and trying to steer them toward the 17 HMR. As much as I'd have been thrilled with it being a 20 WSM, any attempt to create something new, now, would likely just make both fail. All things considered, the best thing they can do to assure the 17 WSM survives is to start making ammo that's much more consistent from shot to shot. I would gladly give up 100fps if they could get the ES #'s, consistently below 50fps.

I think Winchester could improve it, if they would slow the line speed a little. I would be smiling ear to ear if they could get extreme spread below 100fps. Nearly everywhere is well stocked now.

Guys

FWIW,

Here are some spec's for the 20 WSM,
using the best available powders,
(I am sure that the powder used in the 17 WSM,
via the OEM maker could improve these ballistics, but are not available to us),
this is the best I could come up with,

20 WSM
30gr Horn @ 2850+ fps, 24" bbl, at the Max PSI values for the 17 WSM case,

22 WSM
35gr Horn @ 2750+ fps, 24" bbl @ Max psi values for the 17 WSM case.

Tia,
Don

The Hornady 24 grain NTX would be a killer bullet in the 20WSM. If you, or Glass37 need any to test, let me know.

Eric

Eric, pun or no pun? LOL

Just in case Winchester is listening, I'm still available for that 20 WSM with the 24gr NTX project and for what it's worth, not only will I supply my own barrel and reamer but to show you good faith on my part, I'll even come and pick up that pallet of 20 WSM ammo you're going to give me.

Now that is the team spirit! Many are thoroughly experienced at this process with various levels of input from the two sides.

The 24 gr Horn can be launched at 3000+ fps,
for the 20 WSM case @ 30000psi.

Not being necked down as much the pressure is lower which allows more powder to obtain maximum allowed pressure, producing about the same fps

I'll bet 3000fps out of a 17WSM with the 20gr Vmax is a rather mild-ish load. Like Don, I also have the QL software and playing around with different powders and pushing the pressure closer to max shows the 17 WSM w/20gr Vmax is capable of a fair bit more velocity that 3000fps.

Just think what we could do with the different types of OEM powders??
The best powder so far has been Lil-Gun.

Don

The launch of the 17 WSM is probably the poorest introduction of a new product I have ever seen. They couldn't have done it worse if they had tried. A decent rifle with a quality stock at a higher price point would have changed everything, at least for me. Who did they think their target market was? I have mid-priced .17 rifles in HM2, HMR, and Hornet, and would have spent my money on a WSM without hesitation if they had handled it better. By mid-priced, I mean a CZ 455 or equivalent. The Ruger, I'm sure is a quality piece, but I don't care for the long, heavy barrel. I like sporters for my purposes. IMHO.

To the original subject of this thread, I would have preferred to see a .20 WSM, as opposed to the .17 or .22 version. With the velocities the 25 grain load is showing from the .17, I don't see the 22 WSM gaining a lot of velocity over the 22 Magnum.

WSM case is much bigger and is pressure rated much higher. Why would it not be much faster? A better 22mag is one with flatter trajectory, right. So, why would they not make it as fast as possible?
