Deciding on a 22 Mag Rifle

Log in to see fewer ads
I am looking to add a 22 mag rifle to my 22 collection, mostly for plinking. I have looked at the Kel Tek CMR 30 and the CZ 512, and though its not rimfire and probably a totally different type gun, a 22 TCM rifle. I am prbably going to get a semi auto, but I like bolt action, too. Any opinion on the ones I have mentioned?

I have had several 22mags and my favorite and only one I have now is a Savage/Anschutz 141M. Shoots great, looks great and is easy to carry in the timber which is what I think a 22mag is for.

Not only to buy the gun , but the ammo too! Bolt guns are fun , more accurate, nd shoot a lot slower. Which is good for $15.00 a box/50 ammo

The Ruger American Rimfire is a great value and magazine , or you go old school with a used Marlin.

Or with a CZ like this one

If you are set on a semi auto, go with a 512. If you want a bolt gun CZ or RAR.

I've a Savage .22 mag bolt rifle with a black plastic stock. Cheap, and really not expensive looking but you can hit poker chips at a hundred yards all day long. It doesn't seem to be really ammo critical, shoots it all well.

The one I had you would be lucky to hit the poker dealer at 100 yds.

I put a .22 WMR barrel on my 455 American and I was impressed with the results. At 100 yards, groups were slightly over an inch using the CCI 30 gr. soft points. CCI Maxi Mag 40 gr. shot about 1-1/2 inches but were not as consistent as the 30 gr pills.

My Remington 597 will shoot 1 1/2 to 2 MOA which is OK for hunting. It shoots CCI 40 gr HP and Federal 50 gr HP fairly well and has a decent trigger.
The bolt catch is finicky but I'm considering just taking it out altogether.
Overall, it's not a bad rifle for the money.

My Marlins will all shoot 1" 1/2 or better if I do my part with a good rest. The 922 is fun and one of the best shooters. And will easily give moa groups. They can be had around 600 if you search. The bolt guns are very accurate I haven't tested all mine extensively but I know I can grab one and hit what I want out to 100 yards

My favorite (and only) .22 mag rifle is a Ruger 77/22 VMBZ. Love the real rifle feel and flush fit magazine. I have tried seven different ammo types and bullet weights so far, the best groups about 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards, the worst around 2 1/2 inches. When I bought it I needed a rimfire 60-80 yard coyote rifle that would leave them DRT (Dead Right There, didn't want them leaving the scene). If the rifle will put the first bullet within 1 inch of where I am aiming, that will be a DRT coyote. This Ruger will do that with any ammo I can find so far. If I needed more precision I would send it CPC. They turned my 77/22 VHBZ (same rifle but in .22 Hornet) into an under 1 inch at 100 rifle with me holding it! That was an accomplishment.
I know the 77/22 has a reputation for poor precision, but I have been more than happy with mine. Just another option.

Have a Great Day

I recently picked up a CZ 512 and have been really happy with it
Accuracy has been good with several different types of ammo and it has functioned perfectly.
Another nice side benefit is that it only ships with a 5 round magazine, so you can't blow through your pricey 22 Mag ammo too fast. 🤣🤣🤣

For a semi auto I would go with a CZ. I dont have one, but; that is what I would try based on a reputation for reliability and accuracy. Those are the two key considerations for a semi 22mag.

For a plinking bolt action or all day walk around hunting I like the ruger american. I do have one of these. Very satisfied. Not impressed with savage design or execution.

The reviews on CMR30 mixed. I think, it might be fun to play around if buying a extra gun is not a financial burden. If I was making a choice based on personal taste and brand rather than any actual experience, I would lean toward trying the new Rock Island 1911 in 22mag. Lean is understatement. That would be my choice.

I am pleased with the performance of my Zastava 22WMR. These groups were shot at 53 +/- yds. with Hornady 30 gr. VMax.

I have comparable groups with Aguila 40 gr. plated LRN.

I have used the Winchester 40 gr. also, but I can't find my notes on how well it shot and my memory fails me.
