Considering M&P 22 Compact

I primarily shoot Glocks and Sig pistols, and want a .22LR for range plinking - soft shooting and inexpensive.

I used to have a Beretta 87 - really wish I hadn't sold it...

So looking at options - started looking at Ruger SR22 but looking at reviews etc, the M&P 22 compact (non-threaded barrel - thank you NY State) seems like the preferred choice. Not looking for a target gun and want to keep similar style as my other pistols....

What's the consensus here - M&P 22 Compact a good choice and are there others I should look at.... Thanks.

I would opt for the full size M&P 22. I’ve compared my full size to a friend’s compact and found it points better for me, it’s more accurate than the compact and you can get the full size with 12 rd magazines.
The compact also has a different rear sight than the full size and we had issues with the rear sight on the compact moving and ended up putting some blue loctite on it to keep it in place.
My full size has a different style rear sight which is much more rugged than the flimsy POS on the compact.
After my experience with my friend’s compact, I wouldn’t buy one.

You may wish to consider the SW 22 Victory as well. They are well made, accurate and fiber optic sights are standard. I really like mine. I prefer it to my Buck Mark and Ruger MK II.

I have both the full size and compact M&P 22s. Shoot both of them suppressed. No problems at all with either.

Found a great deal at Palmetto State Armory for an M&P 22 Compact for $250 + $8 shipping, so $268 shipped. Still have my FFL fee, but seemed like a great deal.

Since I'm in NY, can't go for one of the evil suppressor ready models. So the basic black compact was the only option. Not sure why but the compact even with the barrel as is, is legal here....

We have both the M&P22 and the M&P22C.
Great guns the have eaten every type of ammo. No problems.

The compact fit my wife's hands perfectly and the fullsize model is mine.

The one thing is that the compact is made in USA by S&W.
The full size model is made by Walther in Germany for S&W.

Hello, I have one of the Compacts, the evil one, that I just love for new shooters to start with. Shoots better than I can. Being in NY the 10 round magazine is not an issue for you, if you ever move there parts kits to increase them to 12.

Took my daughter who lives in Salt Lake City gun shopping last week. We bought a S&W M&P compact. The gun is small and light enough that she will take it with her on her many camping trips.

We shot 100 - 150 rounds of Winchester bulk pack with one failure to feed. Accuracy was acceptable. No leading in the barrel, after I showed her how to disassemble and clean.

The rear sight did move up as we shot it. Will need some Lock-tite on that. But not a bad little pistol for the money.

Came late to the thread, but just joined and wanted to add my 2 cents for other shoppers. I had the M&P22 compact for about 8 months. Great gun, well made and S&W warranty. I found the trigger a bit rough, and personally don't like a hinged trigger, so did not shoot it well. Also bigger than the S&W, so fit my hands better.
Never had a misfire.
Just as an FYI, I traded mine for the new Taurus TX22. One of the best triggers I found on a .22 (it is striker fired), and found the ergonomics perfect.
Just adding my opinion having both guns, and recommend trying the Taurus if you are considering a non-target .22. Don't be misled by the "Taurus Trashers".

I also feel your pain having lived in NY many many years until a few years ago.
Having 10 rounds in a .22 is not really a big deal, and I never intended to get a suppressor.

Enjoy your new gun, I am sure you will like it.

Thanks. I expect the paperwork back in the next week.
I did have a chance to hold and try the trigger at a store.
Didn’t seem terrible, but wasn’t wowed either.
I expect it will be a fun range plinker.

Well, picked up my M&P 22 Compact yesterday and got down to the range today to shoot it, and put about 150 rounds through it.

I had some Rem Golden tips, Federal copper jacketed, and CCI SV. It ate everything smoothly, just one "stove pipe" on my first CCI SV, and put another 100 of CCI SV through it w/o a hiccup.

What a great, fun, gun to shoot. Big enough that it fills your hand, but small enough that it's really easy to hold, shoot, and aim.

I'll need to adjust the sights, even from a rest it was several inches left at 5 yards.

Watch out for the rear sight elevation screw. It tends to work itself out. Caught my wife's just in time. A 3/16 inch O-ring on the screw between the sight and slide gives enough tension to keep the screw from walking.

Promised to post when I had shot mine. Agree with the previous poster . . . great fun gun to shoot. My rear sight was fine so far but the suppressor wanted to come lose. I added a drop of lock-tite and all is good. Mine shot to the left as well. Fixed that promptly.

I’m really enjoying mine as well, glad I sprung for the Smith instead of the Walther or Ruger.
