Winchester 63 d & t for scope?

I have a 1953 Model 63 with a grooved receiver. It has also been drilled and tapped for a scope mount. Does anyone know if it was likely to have been done at the factory? I recall my late Uncle telling me they weren’t too confident with the grooved receivers when they were first introduced. Thanks in advance.

I think if it was in fact manufactured in 1953 i don't think it was done at the factory. From what i have seen grooved receivers started in 1957 till 1958. last year of production. I wonder why someone would drill and tape it for a scope if someone took the time to groove it.

Thank you for the response. Serial number is 120479 which puts the date of manufacture late in 1953 and it definitely has the grooved receiver. The appearance of the bluing doesn’t lead me to believe any reblu has occurred, but I am certainly not an expert, just a guy that has been around for 68 yrs.

Sounds like we have been around for the same number of years.

It's guess-ti-mated that around 1954 Winchester began grooving their .22's for general consumption. I don't think the factory ever tapped a 63. Enjoy!

That's true for some of their .22s. I have a 61 that was made in '54. that is grooved. but from what i've read winchester waited till around 1957 to groove the 63. As result most believe that only about 10,000 were grooved. Mine was made in 1958 and yes it's grooved.
