Questions about your prep work...

Chris,
I am planning on learning something here, so besides using gorgeous wood, what is your process?

I use a similar approach to finishing. I start sanding at or about 220, dry. I wet sand up to 800-1000 grit, 8-12 coats using a two to one mixture of mineral spirits to rub on poly. Same 24 hour drying period between coats, once the finish has dried for a week or two, (My SECRET) I polish it out with a 3M, polishing cloth (3000 grit), it is almost smooth to the touch and it removes no perceptible amount of finish but it does take away any tacky feeling from the stock. Then a coat or two of Renaissance Wax.

That leaves me with a satin finish that looks a mile deep and is smoother than a babies backside. I bet you have secret or two. Please share.
Mike

Chris. Where do you get such pretty wood for 9422? I recently bought a magnum with unmarked bluing but the wood is a mess. Long days in a window gun rack would be my guess. May as well dress it up some. Thanks

Beautiful wood; but True-oil is too much work. Switched to Dyes, and lacquer, as per noremf suggestion, and never looked back. Nothing shows the depth and beauty of Wood like Shellac, but it's not durable. Next in line is lacquer, it's been used since the days of the Pharaoh's of Egypt.
